We recently had to say goodbye to our Director of Patient Relations. Baby had been a faithful employee for nearly a decade at Red Oak. While she complained at times, stole your seat, and could be demanding, she always showed up on time and exactly when you needed her. She will be remembered for her unique bond with Chad the delivery driver and our receptionists.

Baby, you will be missed.

We want to share some bittersweet news about Dr. Capps. After much thought, she has decided to reduce her clinic hours as she prepares for an exciting new chapterā€”relocating to be closer to her soon-to-be husband and family.

Dr. Capps' last full-time clinic day will be January 29, 2025. She will continue working on Tuesdays and Fridays through February before fully transitioning to this next phase of her life.

Rest assured, we have a plan to ensure seamless care for your pets. Dr. Speicher and Dr. Beck, along with the entire ROAH team, are well-equipped to maintain the high standards of care you expect.

We understand transitions can bring questions. Please donā€™t hesitate to reach out if youā€™d like to discuss scheduling or any other details.

Thank you for your trust and support of Dr. Capps over the years. She is deeply grateful for the relationships sheā€™s built with each of you.

You may have seen information in the news lately about felines contracting bird flu. It is still an extremely low risk. We recommend feeding a high quality food that is not raw. Please let us know if you need any recommendations.

Bird flu, specifically the H5N1 strain, has been detected in cats in various parts of the world. Here are some key points to understand:

Transmission:Ā Cats can contract bird flu through:
Consuming infected birds or other animals
Being in environments contaminated with the virus
Consuming unpasteurized milk from infected cows

Symptoms:Ā Infected cats may exhibit:
Fever
Neurologic signs (e.g., tremors, seizures)
Severe illness that can rapidly progress to death

Risk to humans:Ā While there have been no documented cases of H5N1 bird flu transmission from cats to humans, cats have transmitted other influenza strains to humans in the past. The risk of transmission is considered low, but itā€™s essential to take precautions.

Outbreaks:Ā Recent outbreaks have been reported in:
Washington: 20 big cats (including a Bengal tiger, cougars, and bobcats) died at a sanctuary after contracting bird flu.
Oregon: A batch of raw and frozen cat food tested positive for H5N1 bird flu, leading to a recall.
California: Two cats died after drinking raw milk linked to a dairy farm with a bird flu outbreak.

Prevention:Ā To avoid the spread of bird flu:
Avoid raw dairy and undercooked meat products
Limit contact with sick or dead animals
Report sick or dead birds
Keep pets or poultry away from wild animals and birds

Vaccination:Ā There is no commercially available vaccine for cats against H5N1 bird flu. However, researchers are exploring the development of a vaccine.

Monitoring:Ā Keep a close eye on your catā€™s health, and consult with your veterinarian if you notice any unusual symptoms.

Remember, while the risk of transmission to humans is low, itā€™s crucial to take precautions to prevent the spread of bird flu among animals and to monitor your catā€™s health closely.

If you own horses long enough, sooner or later you are likely to be confronted with a medical emergencyā€”even during the holidays. Are you prepared to act?

Having a clear emergency action plan will help you stay focused and effective if a crisis strikes. Below are some basic guidelines that can help you prepare for an equine emergency:

1. Know how to reach your regular veterinarian after hours. Ask about a back-up or referring veterinarian in case your regular horse doctor is not available for emergencies.

2. Have a plan for transporting the horse if necessary and know in advance the most direct route to an equine surgery center.

3. Prepare a first aid kit and store it in a clean, dry, readily accessible place. Keep a first aid kit in your horse trailer or towing vehicle as well and be sure to check your supplies periodically and restock as needed. First-aid kits can be as simple or elaborate as youā€™d like; seek your horse doctor's advice on what to add, especially regarding any drugs that could be included and how they should be administered.

We wanted to inform you that you may hear a couple of new voices when calling Red Oak Animal Hospital. Please join us in welcoming Susan and Crystal, who are our designated virtual receptionists.

They will be assisting Ally with answering calls and providing support to ensure we continue delivering prompt and excellent service.

Susan comes to us with 16 years of experience in the veterinary field, bringing a wealth of knowledge and expertise to every call. Crystal, with an impressive 20 years of experience, is also a Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT), which adds a specialized understanding of veterinary care to her role. Both Susan and Crystal are fully trained in our procedures and are committed to helping you with scheduling, answering your questions, and providing the same high level of care youā€™ve come to expect from our team.

Susan:
I just celebrated my 16th year in vet medicine and still love it! While my work experience has been primarily small animal, my life experience has been consumed by horses. I have had horses all of my life and have been involved in training, showing, roping, sorting, ranch work, trail riding, and for the past 13 years, mounted shooting. I currently have 4 horses, 2 minis, 1 Walker hound, and 2 Australian Shepherds. While the animals don't leave me much free time, I also enjoy traveling, hiking, and researching my family history.

Crystal:
My name is Crystal, I am a Licensed Veterinarian Technician and Certified Canine Massage Therapist. I have been a technician for over 20 years and have been certified in Canine Massage Therapy for over 12 years. I truly enjoy this field! Most of my time in the practice has been small animals with the occasional ranch calls. When I'm not working, I enjoy anything outdoors, motorcycle riding, horseback riding, camping, and spending time with my family and my pets who always keep me on my toes!

If you have any questions or need assistance, please donā€™t hesitate to reach out. We truly appreciate your continued trust in Red Oak Animal Hospital.
