❄️ Limit exposure: Shorten walks on extremely cold days and consider indoor playtime instead.

🌬️ Warm bedding: Provide a comfy bed away from drafts, maybe even with a self-warming blanket.

We recently had to say goodbye to our Director of Patient Relations. Baby had been a faithful employee for nearly a decade at Red Oak. While she complained at times, stole your seat, and could be demanding, she always showed up on time and exactly when you needed her. She will be remembered for her unique bond with Chad the delivery driver and our receptionists.

We want to share some bittersweet news about Dr. Capps. After much thought, she has decided to reduce her clinic hours as she prepares for an exciting new chapter—relocating to be closer to her soon-to-be husband and family.

Dr. Capps' last full-time clinic day will be January 29, 2025. She will continue working on Tuesdays and Fridays through February before fully transitioning to this next phase of her life.

Rest assured, we have a plan to ensure seamless care for your pets. Dr. Speicher and Dr. Beck, along with the entire ROAH team, are well-equipped to maintain the high standards of care you expect.

We understand transitions can bring questions. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you’d like to discuss scheduling or any other details.

Thank you for your trust and support of Dr. Capps over the years. She is deeply grateful for the relationships she’s built with each of you.

You may have seen information in the news lately about felines contracting bird flu. It is still an extremely low risk. We recommend feeding a high quality food that is not raw. Please let us know if you need any recommendations.

Bird flu, specifically the H5N1 strain, has been detected in cats in various parts of the world. Here are some key points to understand:

Transmission: Cats can contract bird flu through:
Consuming infected birds or other animals
Being in environments contaminated with the virus
Consuming unpasteurized milk from infected cows

Symptoms: Infected cats may exhibit:
Fever
Neurologic signs (e.g., tremors, seizures)
Severe illness that can rapidly progress to death

Risk to humans: While there have been no documented cases of H5N1 bird flu transmission from cats to humans, cats have transmitted other influenza strains to humans in the past. The risk of transmission is considered low, but it’s essential to take precautions.

Outbreaks: Recent outbreaks have been reported in:
Washington: 20 big cats (including a Bengal tiger, cougars, and bobcats) died at a sanctuary after contracting bird flu.
Oregon: A batch of raw and frozen cat food tested positive for H5N1 bird flu, leading to a recall.
