Hugh here…

I just want to take a moment to say Happy National Dog Day to everyone!!!

We noticed last week that our Google listing had us listed as ‘Temporarily Closed’ for some reason. Not really sure how long it’s been like that, but I assure everyone that we are open! Also, due to this mishap, we do have open availability!

For an appointment, please call or text Arrington at 719-530-1086 or you can call our shop at 719-395-3900 and leave a message.

As many of you know, I’ve been dealing with some nerve, shoulder and back pain issues for some time now. I’m going to be stepping away for a minute to address these issues. Arrington Wells will be stepping up and filling in for me. Please reach out to him with any questions or scheduling.

While I’m away, I will be suspending all mobile services until further notice.

Our shop hours are Monday through Saturday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
Call or text:

Thank you… Hugh

So… we’re not exactly sure what’s going on with Google listings? But, they’re saying that The Doghouse LTD is temporarily closed. While we’re trying to correct this issue, I assure everyone that we are open.

Monday through Saturday 9:00-6:00.
Shop phone number is 719-395-3900
Mobile number is 719-530-1086

We currently have open availability due to this issue.
Thank you.

Everyone who is thinking of getting dogs should read this because you need to understand this reality:

***I am a 21st century dog.***
-I'm a Malinois.
Overskilled among dogs, I excel in all disciplines and I'm always ready to work: I NEED to work.
But nowadays I get asked to chill on the couch all day everyday.

-I am an Akita Inu.
My ancestors were selected for fighting bears.
Today I get asked to be tolerant and I get scolded for my reactivity when another approaches me.

-I am a Beagle.
When I chase my prey, I raise my voice so the hunters could follow.
Today they put an electric collar on me to shut up, and you make me come back to you - no running - with a snap of your fingers.

-I am a Yorkshire Terrier.
I was a terrifying rat hunter in English mines.
Today they think I can't use my legs and they always hold me in their arms.

-I'm a Labrador Retriever.
My vision of happiness is a dive into a pond to bring back the duck he shot to my master.
Today you forget I'm a walking, running, swimming dog; as a result I'm fat, made to stay indoors, and to babysit.

-I am a Jack Russell.
I can take on a fox, a mean badger, and a rat bigger than me in his den.
Today I get scolded for my character and high energy, and forced to turn into a quiet living room dog.

-I am a Siberian Husky.
Experienced the great, wide open spaces of Northern Europe, where I could drag sleds for long distances at impressive speeds.
Today I only have the walls of the house or small garden as a horizon, and the holes I dig in the ground just to release energy and frustration, trying to stay sane.

-I am a border collie
I was made to work hours a day in partnershipwith my master, and I am an unmistakable artist of working with the herd.
Today they are mad at me because, for lack of sheep, I try to check bikes, cars, children in the house and everything in motion.

I am ...
I am a 21st century dog.
I'm pretty, I'm alert, I'm obedient, I stay in a bag...but I'm also an individual who, from centuries of training, needs to express my instincts, and I am *not* suited for the sedentary life you'd want me to lead.
Spending eight hours a day alone in the house or in the garden - with no work and no one to play or run with, seeing you for a short time in the evening when you get home, and only getting a small toilet walk will make me deeply unhappy.
I'll express it by barking all day, turning your yard into a minefield, doing my needs indoors, being unmanageable the rare times I'll find myself outside, and sometimes spending my days sunk, sad, lonely, and depressed, on my pillow.
You may think that I should be happy to be able to enjoy all this comfort while you go to work, but actually I’ll be exhausted and frustrated, because this is absolutely NOT what I'm meant to do, or what I need to be doing.
If you love me, if you've always dreamed of me, if my beautiful blue eyes or my athletic look make you want me, but you can't give me a real dog's life, a life that's really worth living according to my breed, and if you can't offer me the job that my genes are asking, DO NOT buy or adopt me!
If you like the way I look but aren't willing to accept my temperament, gifts, and traits derived from long genetic selection, and you think you can change them with only your good will, then DO NOT BUY OR ADOPT ME.
I’m a dog from the 21st century, yes, but deep inside me, the one who fought, the one who hunted, the one who pulled sleds, the one who guided and protected a herd still lives within.
So think **very** carefully before you choose your dog. And think about getting two, rather than one, so I won't be so very lonely waiting for you all day. Eight or ten hours is just a workday to you, but it's an eternity for me to be alone.

I suppose it’s time to address the 800lbs gorilla in the room…

First of all, I want everyone to know that I AM NOT a veterinarian, but I do welcome all veterinarians to weigh in on this topic.

Myself and my staff are very aware of the current respiratory illness that is going around. I believe it is a mycoplasma bacterial infection. I know of quite a few local dogs that have been infected by it. From what I understand, there is no cure and it’s highly resistant to antibiotics.

I can’t speak for other groomers, but at The Doghouse Ltd, your pets care always has been and always will be our primary focus. We believe that ventilation and sanitation is key for stopping the spread of infectious diseases in our facilities. We constantly clean and sanitize our workspaces before, during and after all grooming. While I can not guarantee that your pet won’t get sick coming into our facility, I can guarantee that we are doing everything we can to prevent it from happening.

I’m currently asking that all clients, current and future, to please stay away from dog parks, open spaces and trail systems that are heavily used by dogs. I also recommend getting current on all vaccinations, including the Bordatella vaccine.

For other information and inquiries, please contact your vet.

In other news…

Orion got lost yesterday up above Cottonwood Lake. His owner, Becky, has been up there camping and looking for him. If you’ve seen him, or if you’re interested in helping to look for him, she’s organizing a crew to help search for him tomorrow.
You can reach her at 719-659-9581.

10 THINGS YOUR DOG WOULD TELL YOU...
1. My life is likely to last 10 to 15 years. Any separation from you will be painful: remember that before you get me.
2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.
3. Place your trust in me- it is crucial to my well being.
4. Do not be angry at me for long, and do not lock me up as punishment.
5. You have your work, your entertainment, and your friends. I only have you.
6. Talk to me sometimes. Even if I don’t understands your words, I understand your voice when it is speaking to me.
7. Be aware that how ever you treat me, I will never forget.
8. Remember before you hit me that I have teeth that could easily hurt you, but I choose not to bite you because I love you.
9. Before you scold me for being uncooperative, obstinate, or lazy, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I might not be getting the right food, or I have been out too long, or my heart is getting too old and weak.
10. Take care of me when I get old; you too will grow old. Go with me on difficult journeys. Never say: “I cannot bear to watch” or “Let it happen in my absence.” Everything is easier for me if you are there, even my death.
Remember I love you.

We’ve got a lot going on these days…
Some of you have already met Arrington. And, for those of you who haven’t…

Meet your new groomer…

“Salutations! For those of you I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting yet, I’m Arrington and I’m thrilled to be joining the team at The Doghouse full time beginning this summer!
I’m a recent-ish CO transplant coming from the Florida swamps, now enjoying not being a sweaty puddle everyday. I started a grooming apprenticeship around five years prior to moving here and continued to groom until I left Florida. I’m beyond grateful for the opportunity to continue this passion out here in the mountains and I’m positively stoked to get to know and love each and every one of your doggos!!” 🤙🏾

Call us today at 719-530-1086 or 719-395-3900 to get on Arrington’s schedule! 🐾🎾✨

Meet your new groomer…

“Hello! I’m Jess… A Chaffee County native who took the long way back home. Born and raised in Salida, I spent 7 years in Oregon after graduating from CSU. I have a love of animals, the outdoors and traveling. I’ve been fortunate enough to see other parts of the world, and taught English in Asia for 3 years before returning to Colorado. I am so happy to be back and to be working with my first love, dogs! I’m excited to get to know the people and pups in our community!”

You can come meet Jess at our shop in Buena Vista, located at 115 Tabor St, behind the Town Hall. Jess is now accepting new clients. To book an appointment, please call 719-530-1086 or 719-395-3900. Thank you! 🙏🎾🐾

So… As of October 1st 2022, we will be implementing a new cancellation and no call/no show policy.

All I ask for is 24 hours notice for cancellations and rescheduling.

If you call and cancel on the day of your appointment, I’m going to require 50% of the grooming rate. If you do a no call/no show, I’m going to require 100% of the grooming rate and you’ll be placed in my next available appointment, before your next appointment.

I’m currently way too busy and I’m booked out about two months right now. When someone cancels short notice or doesn’t show up at all, by the time I call someone in, it’s too late and it will throw off my whole day and we can’t afford to have any open time slots right now. If you would like a reminder text, I will be happy to provide one.

Thank you for your understanding of our current situation.

Hugh
