I stayed in constant communication with him from the moment we met.
That means:
Observing his behavior at home with his big feelings & toys
Setting boundaries immediately of how he'll interact with me (jumping, mouthing, pawing, etc)
Controlling the lead as I walked him to my van & making him wait to ceoss the street with me.
Observing his body language as he sniffed around my van beFUR getting started
Constantly watching his posture, ears, face, fidgeting, etc
Taking breaks to check in with him to break up the monotony of grooming
Giving him breaks for play bith on & off the table
ResPAWnding to his concerns when I notice his distraction with a toy, treat, or his body language changed.
Reevaluating my methods to see if I can adjust something I'm doing to make him more comFURtable.
ReinFURcing PAWSitive behavior with praise in a manner that he most likes (testing out which he gets most happy about: treats, pets/verbal praise, toys, breaks)
Every fur baby has thoughts & feelings.
Every fur baby is unique & had unique PAWSt experiences.
Every fur baby deserves to be met where they're at to build a PAWSitive grooming experience for life.

This is Lucy's FURSt ever groom at Club Pawsh.
She is 11.5 years old & has had the same groomer her whole life until now.
BeFUR I began recording, she was already trying to bite me from her carrier.
Just like with us hoomans, new can be scary & change can be hard.
Being 1 of only 3 Fear Free Certified Professional Groomers in Buffalo, I knew that this was very likely Lucy's FURSt time experiencing grooming that took her emotions & concerns into consideration, let alone prioritized them, especially given her many reservations throughout the PURRocess.
This isn't to say whoever her PURRevious groomer was was bad! This is not to shame anyone.
The point is that just because someone has been doing something for a long time doesn't mean they have been doing it correctly, safely, or according to one of many difFURent philosophies out there.
Signs to look for:
🐾 Has your dog been receiving rePAWrts of declining cooPURRation or behavior?
🐾 Are certain PAWrts of a groom no longer being accomplished or being completed as PAWlished & well done as beFUR (& it's been the same PURRSon)?
🐾 Does your dog show signs of fear/anxiety/stress when you mention going to the groomer, their name, or when you arrive at the location?
None of those items listed definitively mean that your dog is having a bad time or being mistreated. In fact, many pups like to pull at your heartstrings while their loved ones are around in FURont of a groomer & do a complete 180° turn in behavior once you leave.
However, these *may* indicate that PURRhaps they have some concerns that have been ignored in interest of "just getting the job done" or time constraints.
This doesn't make the groomer or establishment bad; it's just not the right environment for everyone.
At Club Pawsh, I 100% believe that your dog's emotional & mental wellbeing are second only to their immediate physical wellbeing.

Senior fur babies often cannot be groomed the same or with the same expectations as younger pups.
They need more time, understanding, & PAWtience.
Jacques wasn't aggressive at all; he was simply terrified of what can already be a scary or stressful experience, compounded by his aging body & his coat condition from not getting the care he needed.

She just became the fastest Grooming Rehab graduate we've ever had at Club Pawsh.
In only 5 sessions, she gained the confidence & reqired her association with getting her nails done to where I feel she is ready to get full grooms with no more stress!
When she came to me over a month ago, we were able to complete her full groom, but nails were a panic button for her & i wasn't able to get them filed or as short as we would like.
Even trimming her paw hair was a delicate & stressful PURRocess for her.
It added lots of extra time to her apPAWntment.
So I discussed Grooming Rehab as an option for her so her association with me doesn't become a fear-based one.
Grooming Rehab consists of several mini (20 minute) sessions, once PURR week, consecutively, where we solely work on rebuilding new neurological PAWthways for them very things yiurbfur baby has an aversion to.
SLOWLY, we rebuild trust & progress towards the end goal, always keeping stressors low & adding in lots of love & rewards.
This included homework that her mom was given to do (& not do) to help her along.

Paco was unable to complete what was supPAWSed to be a full groom this time around.
He sees me every 6 weeks, alternating between BOOS (Brush Out Only Service) & Cat's Pajamas (full groom) to maintain his fluffy coat.
But this time, with the seasonal weather change, his coat began thickening up for the colder weather, so what normally takes about an hour to comb out took 2 this time.
He had reached his stress threshold about that time, so I didn't feel it was safe to continue with his bath.
Cats can go into an emergency-induced stress situation in the blink of an eye, so it's extremely imPAWtant to be vigilant & respectful of what they communicate & when.
His PAWrents already knew that when they began working with me (in their intro notes beFUR his FURSt ever apPAWntment, they wrote "if he gets even a little stressed, please stop for the day"). YES! That is the proper way to work with any cat! 👏🏼
So it is extremely rewarding to watch Paco actually request & give PURRmission tonresume grooming.
Notice he isn't trying to get back into his carrier.
He is aware that he has some degree of autonomy in this environment &, given the time, he CHOOSES to come to me.
Yes, that takes more time & PAWtience, but it is completely worth it, don't you think
