Attention Mare Owners! If you have goals of breeding early this next season; Thanksgiving week is when you will want to start getting your mares under lights. When artificial lighting is implemented, ovulation usually occurs two and a half months later. During this time a 100-200 W incandescent or a fluorescent light in their stall is appropriate to provide 16 hours of light and 8 hours of darkness. Equilume light masks are also excellent devices we can use for our pasture housed mares. Stay tuned! We have an exciting surprise regarding next years breeding season as well!

Friendly reminder regarding emergency after hours care with Buffalo Equine.

We only see after hours emergencies for established clients. An established client is one who has used us within the last year for; at minimum, preventative health appts. This could include wellness exams, vaccines, and/or dental work. If you are not a current client, and have not been referred to us by your current veterinarian, and call Buffalo Equine after hours, you will be told we only see current, established clients on emergency and they receive priority for after hours emergency call.
If you do not have an established relationship with a veterinarian for your horse and you would like emergency coverage, a wellness visit to establish a valid Veterinary-Client-Patient-Relationship during regular business hours will be required.
While we are happy to help, we are not a referral hospital and take patients for in clinic care on a case by case basis so these patients can be provided the care they require during their stay.
Remember every one of our doctors has family, friends, and a life outside of being on call. Providing emergency care is prioritized to current clients in order to best serve them, and it is also critical to protecting our doctors well being.

Dr George Theisen officially retired today from Buffalo Equine. He started practicing at Buffalo Equine in 1986, and after retiring from daily appointments, became our business manager. We are sad to see him go, but excited he will enjoy his time perfecting his golf game even more.
On a more personal note, I grew up watching George work in the equine community. He was one of my personal vets and the preferred vet of many of the horse barns that I worked for. As a young kid I learned quickly how to cycle mares, recognize a respiratory illness, and triage a colic. He always arrived to the barn with a big smile that made you feel like everything was going to be ok. Dr. Boster, myself, and the staff of Buffalo Equine will greatly miss George!!
