We have some adorable little ones and a few extra special, deserving felines this week available pre-select while they wait out their abandoned/stray hold all looking for loving homes.

As always, if you're considering adding a new family member, we'd love to meet you! And if you just need a snuggle or two after a long week, that’s perfectly okay too.

If adoption isn’t an option for you right now, we completely understand. However, if you could please share this post, it would mean the world to us. The more people we reach, the more we can spread the word about our mission and provide the essential services animals need.

Thank you for your support

This school year, Crossroads has embarked on an exciting partnership with Terra Nova School, a 6-12 charter school here in Buffalo. The school’s motto, "Out of the Classroom, Into the World," aligns perfectly with the hands-on experiences offered through this collaboration. Every month, a select group of Terra Nova students visit the shelter twice to engage in enriching activities that provide them with a deeper understanding of animal care and the vital role Crossroads plays in the community.

During these visits, students are introduced to the range of services Crossroads provides, and they assist our dedicated staff with various tasks, including animal care, observing surgeries, and learning about dog and cat behavior. This immersive learning experience allows them to witness firsthand the important work done at the shelter, while also gaining practical knowledge they can apply in their own lives.

On this particular visit the students took part in an incredibly calming and soothing activity: reading to the dogs. It may sound simple, but the impact was profound. In a kennel filled with energetic dogs, the peaceful atmosphere that settled in as the students read aloud was palpable. The dogs, some of whom are often anxious, responded to the sound of human voices with a quiet serenity, and for a moment, the noise of the shelter was replaced by the calming presence of these young readers.

This simple, yet powerful interaction illustrates how small actions can have a big impact, not just for the dogs but for the students as well. It’s a reminder of the power of compassion, patience, and connection, and how moments like these enrich the lives of everyone involved.

We look forward to continuing this meaningful partnership with Terra Nova and hope that the students grow and learn from their experiences here at Crossroads.

Mornings like these are always difficult for our staff. This past Friday at 7:15 am this is what one of our staff members arrived to find. It’s natural to feel anger when we hear about situations where animals are abandoned—left on the side of the road, exposed to the harsh, cold winds and below-zero wind chills, not knowing how long it would be before anyone could come to their aid. It’s hard not to let that anger take over.

But today, we won’t.

While Crossroads did not have the immediate housing capacity for these felines, thanks to the incredible response from our volunteers and staff, we’ve been able to make it work. These cats are now warm, fed, and on their way to finding loving homes.

Crossroads offers so many options that make situations like this unnecessary. We have a Community Veterinary Clinic that provides affordable spay, neuter, and wellness care. Our Shelter Shelf offers food assistance for both cats and dogs. And we have a surrender program—it’s an appointment-based intake system due to our capacity, but we will help you with supplies to care for your pet until we have room.

Please visit crossroadsshelter.org for more information on our veterinary clinic services and shelter programs. If you have questions, feel free to reach out at [email protected] or [email protected]

Staff pick of the week
Meet Dolly, Dolly is a cattle dog mix and she is a true doll. Dolly is just about a year old and is an absolute lover. Dolly has been with us here for about 4 months now and we are a little puzzled as to why. She is good with other dogs, and she LOVES children and everyone she meets.

We are working hard to find Dolly a home, she is overlooked because she is not a puppy and we hear comments that people think she may be a Pittbul mix.

Next to Dolly is a training tool that we've used in-house to challenge bias. What we believe to be true frequently is not. We are conditioned to see a body type, the shape of an ear, or the roundness of a head and make an assumption.

This is a very common bias and it keeps ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL dogs like Dolly in shelters all over the country.

If you would like to meet Dolly please come in and visit. she is eligible for our foster-to-adopt program as well. Email [email protected] for more information on this program.

This is a very common bias and keeps ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL dogs like Dolly in shelters nationwide.

Meet Layla: Crossroads Animal Shelter's Highlight of the Week!

Layla came to us last August, found abandoned on the side of the road with her puppy (who has since been adopted). She was underweight, dehydrated, and covered in ticks. After testing positive for heartworm, Layla was placed in foster care where she received the treatment she needed.

After a successful heartworm treatment, Layla is now at the tail end of her recovery and ready for a loving forever home! If you’re looking for a resilient, sweet dog who deserves a second chance, Layla might just be the one for you.

Read more about Layla on our website crossroadsshelter.org

If you would like to meet Layla please email [email protected] to make an appointment she is currently in foster and would love to meet you.

Foster Love, Change Lives - Foster Homes Needed

As we all recover from the holiday season and look ahead to a new year, many of us think about how we can make a difference. One often overlooked yet incredibly impactful opportunity is fostering animals in need.

Fostering is a less permanent commitment than adoption, but it still allows you to make a huge difference in the lives of dogs and cats searching for their permanent homes. By opening your home to an animal in need, you provide them with the safe, loving environment they need to heal, grow, or receive extra care while they wait for their adopting families. It's also a great opportunity for individuals or families who aren’t currently ready to adopt but still want the experience of having a pet in their lives.

When you foster, you help animals build trust, regain confidence, and adapt to living in a home environment. You'll also help them become more socialized, which greatly improves their chances of finding a permanent home. It's a truly rewarding experience, knowing that you've played a key role in their journey to a better life.

Crossroads provides all necessary supplies including food any needed medical care, you supply the home, time & love.

If you and your family are interested in helping animals in need, consider fostering in the new year. Go to our website crossroadsshelter.org to sign up.

Thank you for considering making a difference in the life of a rescue animal. Wishing you a new year filled with kindness and compassion!
