📱 It’s the first Takeover Tuesday of 2025! This year, one of our Buffalo Zoo keepers will be taking over our Instagram/Facebook stories on a Tuesday each month to showcase some of what goes on in their day. Our first featured keeper is Nicole!

Nicole is a keeper in M&T Bank Rainforest Falls and has been at the Buffalo Zoo for a bit over two years. She is a Buffalo native who received a Bachelor’s of Science degree in biology conservation from SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry.

She has plenty of favorite animals, but her top pick is a thresher shark due to their unique tail. Giant pandas are a close second.

Her favorite part about working at the Zoo is her amazing coworkers, who have helped her learn and grown in the field. The animals are, of course, also a huge favorite for her, as she’s created countless bonds with the many residents of M&T Bank Rainforest Falls.

Interested in becoming a volunteer docent who educates and interacts with visitors at the Buffalo Zoo? Now is your chance! 😁

The process to become a docent begins this month with two info sessions for inquiring individuals from 1-2 p.m. on Jan. 18 and 25 at the Zoo.

Training, which is hybrid, begins later this year. There are five mandatory in-person dates, which last from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., that trainees must attend:

-March 8
-March 15
-March 22
-April 12
-May 3

Those who'd like to become a docent can email Caroline Niehoff at [email protected] to express their interest and learn more about the process.

📖 The Buffalo Zoo is partnering with Alice, Ever After Books for a book reading of "The Mitten" by Jan Brett at noon Saturday, Jan. 11 in the Tree House play space!

The family favorite children's book tells the story of a young boy whose lost mitten leads to a snowy adventure for woodland animals. Attendees can also enjoy a craft, animal biofacts and meet one of the Zoo's animal ambassadors.

The event is free to attend for all with Zoo entry!

🍻 First, the Pro Zoo Board hosts SoHo-Ho Happy Hour from 6-8 p.m. Jan. 16 at Soho. Tickets are just $30 and include appetizers and a basket raffle, with proceeds benefitting the Zoo!

The Buffalo Zoo Photo Contest presented by the Women’s Board of the Buffalo Zoo is back once again with two categories:

- People's Choice (any Zoo animal photo from 2024)
- Zoomagination 2024 (any Zoomagination 2024 photos)

Additionally, all submitted photos will be in the running for Best of Show, which will be selected by a panel of judges. First, second and third place finishers will be awarded $100, $75 and $50, respectively, for each category and the Best of Show winner will receive $100. The deadline to submit your photos is Jan. 31, and online voting will span the month of February. All proceeds support the Buffalo Zoo!
