I’m helping Jeanine with her moms dog Charlie, who is quite a bit fearful to be groomed. I’m working on slowly modifying his behavior.
At first, I couldn’t really even touch him without getting bit; let alone use sharp shears around his face.
In order to get him to trust me, my hands and my tools(comb, brush, clippers, shears); I had to spend a little time with him. I had to get my hands on his little body, the best way without getting bit, long enough for him to know it wasn’t going to hurt. Naturally I did get bit a few times, but by judging his behavior I was able to MOSTLY keep my fingers far enough away when he struck. So I finally get my hands just on his body, just resting. I slowly started petting and before long I could pet his face.
Once I was able to achieve that, I started backwards combing the hair on his head with my fingers; mimicking my comb. Once he was comfortable with that, I used the comb as an extension of my hands to start combining the top of his head. Once I was able to comb his face, I used my shears to then comb his hair like he was accustomed. This is how I was able to trim his face without him lunging or biting my hands, comb or more importantly; my shears.
He is very reactive to the brush still, as it has a distinct shape and feel when he bites it. Next time I will try a completely different shaped brush in order to get him to trust it.
Taking small steps like that is the best way to get dogs used to you. Using something that the dog already trusts and using it to introduce something new is the best way to get them comfortable.

One of my favorite videos because it demonstrates how if you allow your pet to be groomed on a regular basis, at least 6 times a year, they get to truly enjoy it.
This is my buddy Milo and he gets groomed every 6 weeks; he also thoroughly is enjoying his groom as you can see, And therefore, it is a pleasurable experience for him.
When you budget to the point where you get your dog the very bare minimum, you instead cause them to have a day of confusion and fear. Which of course costs the groomer more time. Dogs that are groomed on a regular basis realize that grooming is a simple part of life. Dogs that are not, think they’re being punished.
Please get your babies groomed on a regular routine; even if it's just for a simple nail trim and brush out. Helping at home by combing and brushing and playing with your dogs feet is one of the owners responsibilities as well.
