As temperatures begin to rise, it’s important to keep our furry friends safe from the impending heat! Remember to provide plenty of shade, fresh water, and never leave your pet in a parked car, even for a short period of time. Heatstroke can occur quickly and can be life-threatening for pets, so be mindful of signs such as excessive panting, drooling, and lethargy.

Let’s work together to ensure our pets stay cool, hydrated, and healthy this summer! 🐶🐱☀️

🎄✨ ‘Tis the season to keep our furry friends merry and bright! 🐾🌟
As we embrace the holiday cheer, let’s remember some safety tips to ensure a pawsitively happy season for our pets:

Food 🍽️: Resist those puppy eyes! Some festive treats, like chocolate, raisins, and certain seasonings can be harmful to pets. Stick to pet-friendly foods and avoid giving your pets leftovers or snacks from your plate.

Decorations and Trees 🎄: Sparkly ornaments and tinsel are tempting, but they can pose a risk if eaten or swallowed. Opt for pet-safe decorations and keep wires and lights out of paw’s reach. Cats especially love climbing, and dogs might be tempted to explore so secure your Christmas tree to prevent any topples. Also consider a pet-friendly tree deterrent to discourage curious noses.

Create a Safe Space 🏠: Provide a quiet retreat for your pets during gatherings or other situations that may be stressful for your pet. The hustle and bustle can be overwhelming, and a cozy spot away from the festivities can be a comfort for them.

Toxic Plants 🪴 : Some holiday plants like amaryllis, holly, and mistletoe can be toxic to pets. Keep them out of reach or opt for pet-safe alternatives.

Let’s make this holiday season not only festive for us but safe and enjoyable for our beloved pets too! 🐕🐾🐈

A Tail-Wagging Day with Daisy and The Cary Report!

I had such an amazing day being interviewed by The Cary Report, a local online publication, and what made it even better was I got to meet Daisy, the owner's adorable pup!

We had a fantastic time talking about the importance of positive dog training methods and also discussed understanding your pup's unique training needs and how a well-trained dog is a happy dog!

You can read all about our time together in The Cary Report's article on their website at thecaryreport.com 🐾🐶❤️

Woof, everyone! I'm Daisy, and I'm here to share a tail-wagging adventure I had with Philicia Loving, the pawsitively wonderful owner and dog trainer behind Loving Pet Services.

The Wake County Animal Center is nearing maximum capacity and in about the last seven days, the center has taken in 90 dogs. That brings their total number of dogs waiting for homes to 135 as of Sunday, March 5. There are around another 20 dogs with foster families also waiting for adoption.

On top of that, appointments to surrender pets are fully booked through mid-April. That means 130 more dogs will be entering the shelter over the next six weeks. Want to help?

Adoption fees are $95 for dogs, $45 for cats under five years old, and $15 for cats that are greater than five years old. However, any dog or cat that’s been at the shelter for more than two weeks is available for just $25 for dogs and “name your price” for cats.

Adopt: https://pets.wake.gov/

‼️ OUR DOG ADOPTION FLOOR IS FULL ‼️

We have over 90 dogs on our adoption floor, and we are quickly running out of kennel space. Our owner-surrender appointments are booked out until mid-April and, by our calculation, we have another 130+ dogs coming in over the next six weeks.

Thanks to our community stepping up to help in the past, we have not had to euthanize to make space on our adoption floor in the last seven years. We need your help to keep it that way!

How you can help:
1. Adopt!
If you’re looking for a great dog, come visit us! We’re open every day from 12pm-6pm, except major holidays. Our staff and volunteer matchmakers would love to help you find your next family member.

2. Foster!
We have dozens of local 501c3 animal rescue partners, but they can’t help us unless they have foster homes. Sign up to be a foster and insist they transfer an animal from the Wake County Animal Center into their care. Fostering is a great way to help save lives, from the comfort of your own home.

3. Share on social media!
We have some fantastic dogs who are deserving of loving homes, we have others who have strayed from their homes and need to be reunited with their owner - share them far and wide!

4. If you know someone whose pet is missing, check the Wake County Animal Center! We love reuniting lost pets with their families, but we can’t make that happen if their owner doesn’t know where to look. Any pet with a “I’m not yet available” flag on their profile came in as a stray within the last 3-5 days. Help us reunite them with their family.

5. If you find a stray/lost dog, please try to find the owner yourself - post online, ask friends for help, have a veterinarian scan for a microchip. Even just a couple of days can make all the difference. Plus, you get to be a part of that magical reunion!

6. If you must rehome your dog, please do it yourself - post online, ask friends and family for help, return your dog to where you adopted from, reach out to area rescues, etc. Remember, we are taking owner-surrenders by appointment only and are booked out for weeks. Please plan accordingly if you must rehome your dog.

Our staff, volunteers, fosters, and 501c3 transfer partners can only do so much without community support. Our dogs are counting on you to help them find new homes before we reach capacity. Please help!

Let's Celebrate National Dog Day! I know for most of us EVERYDAY is dog day but on this day in particular let’s celebrate our canine companions!

Dogs do so much to enrich our lives. Some dogs have important jobs, while others act as our loving family members playing a crucial part in our mental and physical wellbeing. National Dog Day also serves as a reminder that there are many dogs in shelters and rescues who still need a family of their own.

Today, I encourage you to share photos of your dogs so we as a community can celebrate all the pups together. After all, dogs are family!

Happy National Black Cat Appreciation Day!

Did you know that in some cultures, black cats are thought to bring good luck and prosperity? While many myths surround black cats, there are tons of reasons black cats make excellent additions to any home. Unfortunately, due to the superstitions surrounding black cats, many people choose not to adopt them. That’s why we have Black Cat Appreciation Day. This national holiday allows us to celebrate our beloved house panthers while bringing awareness to their adorable breed.

Celebrate Black Cat Appreciation Day by adopting a black cat. Take photos of your black cat if you already own one too! Support your local shelters and volunteer. You can groom a black cat (or any cat for that matter), give them cuddles, and maybe even take one home. Overcome your fears and use while sharing your new-found love for those black kitties on social media. Children can also join in by drawing pictures of black cats!

Getting ready for a hike or an outdoor adventure with your pup? Hiking with your pet provides health benefits to both you and your dog, as well as deepening your bond through shared experiences.

Here are some items to bring along to ensure a safe adventure for both you and your fuzzy hiking partner!

1. Leash, Collar, or Harness: your leash should be durable enough to withstand the rigors of the trail. Ensure that your pet’s harness or collar is loose enough that you can easily slip two fingers underneath. Be careful not to have the collar or harness so loose that it could slip off.
2. Food, Water, and a Collapsible Bowl: Try to carry at least 8 ounces of water per dog per hour of hiking. Avoid letting your dog drink standing water from puddles and ponds, as bacteria and parasites can be present there and cause your pup to become sick.
3. GPS Tracking Collar, Identification Tag, and/or Microchip: A microchip can be easily inserted by your veterinarian and is a great way to ensure that you will be reunited with your pet if they get lost or separated from you. If your pet isn't microchipped, make sure they are wearing a collar with an ID Tag if they are outside or at risk of getting lost.
4. Canine first aid kit: Carry along some basic supplies that will help you deal with injuries that your dog might sustain on the trail, either in your own first aid kit or in a canine first aid kit. A few items to bring along should include: hydrogen peroxide to disinfect cuts, scissors with rounded tips to trim hair around wounds, bandages and gauze pads, tweezers to remove foreign objects from any cut or wound, and a clean small sock or bo**ie to protect a wounded foot.

I always love reading a heartwarming story like this!

Animals with black fur are often overlooked at shelters resulting in more of them being up for adoption. With cats, a lot of the time its the superstition that they will be bad luck and with dogs, its just a numbers game.

https://mymodernmet.com/maggie-epling-shelter-pet-photos/?utm_source=join1440&utm_medium=email&utm_placement=newsletter&fbclid=IwAR0iZUiUqMxj-CsXZdJC5nPfD7LmsLZwc1MN6nZkfH37n5qU5ZdVgJlwfhc

This photographer is especially focused on black shelter cats and dogs because they often have the hardest time getting adopted.

It’s that time of year when large litters of kittens are born across the country. This is the season these cuddly kitties need help more than ever! During the whole month of June, you can name your price and take home any kitty that is more than five months old at The Wake County Animal Center!

There’s an influx of cuteness every springtime at the Wake County Animal Center – it’s that time of year when large litters of kittens are born across the country and often end up in animal shelters. This is the season these cuddly kitties need help more than ever.
