Here’s a list of toxic candies for dogs and cats that pet owners should avoid:
1. Chocolate – Contains theobromine and caffeine, which are toxic to both dogs and cats. Dark chocolate and baking chocolate are especially dangerous.
2. Xylitol – A sugar substitute found in sugar-free gum, candies, and mints. It can cause a rapid release of insulin, leading to hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), seizures, liver failure, and even death in dogs. Cats may also be affected.
3. Hard Candy – Can cause choking, intestinal blockages, or broken teeth. Additionally, if the candy contains xylitol, it’s extremely toxic.
4. Candy Corn – High sugar content can lead to digestive upset, and in large amounts, it can cause pancreatitis.
5. Gummy Candy – Often contains xylitol and is hard for pets to digest, leading to gastrointestinal issues.
6. Licorice – Contains glycyrrhizin, which can be harmful in large quantities, leading to increased blood pressure, muscle breakdown, or kidney issues.
7. Sour Candies – Acids in sour candies can cause stomach upset, while sugar content can lead to pancreatitis.
8. Macadamia Nuts in Candy – These nuts are particularly toxic to dogs, causing lethargy, vomiting, tremors, and hyperthermia.
9. Raisins/Currants in Candies – Extremely toxic to both dogs and cats, can cause kidney failure.
10. Lollipops (and their sticks) – The candy itself can contain harmful ingredients, and the sticks can pose a choking hazard or cause intestinal damage if swallowed.
Always keep Halloween or holiday candies out of reach of pets!

Vet nurses and techs are essential to the smooth running of every clinic, and while we appreciate them every single day, this week was a special reminder to say THANK YOU for everything they do. Without them, your pets wouldn’t receive the thorough, loving care they deserve.
A vet nurse or tech often is a:
🧑⚕️ Surgical assistant
🩻 Radiographer
🔬 Laboratory technician
🦠 Infection control officer
👥 Counselor
🧸 Cuddle buddy
..and so much more!
