Our no-kill shelter is powered by volunteers and tax-deductible contributions. What Else We Do: We seek to place pets in forever homes where they will be part of the family. We spay or neuter every dog or cat in our shelter. Where possible, we treat them for parasites, injuries, and illnesses. We microchip them. We educate adopters about how to be responsible pet owners. In addition to caring for

animals needs, much of the construction, repairs and grounds maintenance is also a job for our volunteers, as well as performing all the tasks of running a shelter such as answering the phone and keeping records. Volunteering at BAHS is a great character-building experience.

🚨 LOST DOG — LAST SEEN IN JOPLIN, MISSOURI 🚨
SIGHTINGS NEEDED — PLEASE READ CAREFULLY

Ambrose, a 1-yr-old, 45-lb Heeler/Hound/Terrier mix, was recently adopted and escaped at a rest stop in Joplin, Missouri while traveling to his new home. He did not escape from the shelter or from a local home.

He comes from a difficult background and is extremely fearful of people. He is not aggressive, but will run if approached or called to.

For his safety, we are asking the public to report sightings only so trained trappers can recover him safely.

⚠️ Please do NOT chase, call to, follow, or attempt to interact with him.

When frightened dogs feel pressured, they run farther and put themselves in danger. The safest thing for him is to feel unseen so he can settle in one area.

If you see him in or around Joplin, Missouri, please:
• Note the exact location, time, and direction of travel
• Take a photo or video from a distance if possible
• Leave the area calmly
• Call immediately with details

This puppy already knows what it feels like to be left behind.

Wilbur is just 6 months old (DOB 6/19/25), and his life has already had more plot twists than it should. Adopted from another local rescue then dumped.

What didn’t change? His joy. His wiggle. His love for people.

Wilbur is a cuddly, snuggly, playful terrier mix who believes every human might be his human.

Wilbur is 33 lbs of happy energy. Zero bitterness. All heart.

He’s ready for a fresh start—this time, forever.

She’s watched her brother and two sisters get picked up one by one, tails wagging, heading into their forever homes. And she’s still here.

Tessa has an amazing temperament and is adorable to boot.

💔This is Maggie’s third Christmas waiting for her person.

And she still greets every human like maybe you’re the one.

Maggie is the rare combo: active when you want adventure, chill when you want the couch. She loves people, gives full-body hugs, will absolutely sit in your lap (all 53 lbs of love), and locks eyes with you like she’s listening—because she is.

She’s an only-dog kind of girl, a great hiking buddy, and deeply invested in making her humans happy.

Maggie has been with us since September 9, 2023. Three holidays. Zero families.
Let’s not make it four. ❤️

🐾 Our Cats. Their Stories. Their Chance. – Part 2 🐾

As we move toward the end of the year, we want to pause and say thank you.

In 2025, more than 400 cats have already been adopted through our shelter — an incredible number that was only possible because of you.
Because you adopted.
Because you shared.
Because you fostered.
Because you cared.

We are truly grateful.

This post is the first in a short series we will be sharing through the end of the year, introducing the cats who are still waiting for their chance.

As we head into the holidays and toward the end of the year, we hope that a few more cats will still find their forever homes before Christmas.

Some of the cats you’ll see are not the easy cats.
Some are shy and need time.
And some are simply sweet as sugar — gentle souls still waiting to be noticed.

Below the photos, you’ll find very short descriptions of each cat.

If you’re looking for a dog who loves everyone, meet Laura.

She’s been with us just a few weeks—and in that short time, she’s proven she’s cuddly, gentle, playful, and genuinely joyful. Great in the car, great at the vet, great with people and dogs.

Laura is a Shepherd mix (DOB 11.26.23), 45 lbs, pulled from ACS, and very ready to be someone’s favorite hello at the end of the day.

✨ Forever Home Update ✨

Just in time for Christmas, we love sharing happy endings. 💛
We love receiving updates about cats who were adopted some time ago and hearing how well they are doing in their forever homes.

This little guy, originally named Pecos, was rescued from the Guadalupe livery over two years ago — dumped, sickly, and unwanted.
Today, he is a healthy, happy, and deeply loved boy, living with Axel and his mom and dad.

We were especially touched to hear that Axel organized a fundraiser at his school for the shelter, collecting wonderful gifts for the next generation of livery kittens — wherever they may come from.

Stories like this remind us why we do what we do: happy cats, happy families, and hope for those still waiting.
