Nippy horse? Could it be the horse's effort to clarify communication after subtle signs are missed?
If your horse nips, it likely that the horse is just trying to communicate to you that other efforts of communication on his/her part have been missed or misunderstood. Or, is it possible that the subtle signs were recognized and that some sort of miscommunication has occurred without resolution etc. from the horses viewpoint? Sometimes this type of behavior is accidentally reinforced. For example, someone may feed when they think the horse is about to nip as an attempt to redirect. Other people play with a horse's face in a way that encourages them to nip, without realizing it.
A great way to begin addressing nipping behaviors is by videoing the interaction between the human and the horse and carefully analyzing what signs lead up to the nippy behavior and what the human is doing beforehand. With this information, one can better read the horse's emotions and the associated behaviors. Then, address both of these by training safely in protected contact.
In all training and especially in circumstances where horses may nip, two way communication and positively rewarding the behavior that we want to see more of, such as the horse standing with it's head straight and soft, is the key!
Not sure who is entertaining who here? Either way, great to see that Eclipse knows his cue for kiss so well that he will perform for my husband and kiss the phone too, both brand new changes of context! so often I see people disappointed in the performance of their horse or dog simply because another person is present or a new person is around. It really can make a difference to an animal's training, performance and focus as to who when where why and how things may change in the environment. This was another love letter/media from home. Good grief, have you ever seen anything so silly? Gotta love that horse and that man.

Next time you want to train like the pros, try using your senses to tap into the power of imagery. The more specifics you can imagine about your ideal ride, the sooner you will be able to achieve the results you desire!
I had a lovely chat with Ulrike Berzau about the mindset we bring to the barn and the self-talk we should maintain while in the barn and with our horses. We discussed some tips on how to change our intentions around experiences at the barn and with our horses.
Walking my talk with cross species training - adapting from horses to goats. Training goats is incredibly entertaining and rewarding!

Horseplay day! Dressage training in the morning, trick pony in the afternoon it might seem to some But the truth is we do this is, the lay down has multiple purposes in this case. It's a fun trick, a great opportunity to bond, and hopefully will him feel more comfortable lying down. (This horse rarely lays down on his own as he tends to be a perimeter watcher.)
We've been training him to lay down on cue via capturing and increasing his comfort level being approached while he's laying down. It really says a lot about his trust level that he lets the pup come in for a 🥕 too!
