Is Your Dog Protected from the Flu? 🀧 Let's Talk Canine Influenza Virus (CIV)!

Just like humans, dogs can get the flu! Canine Influenza Virus (CIV), including strains like H3N2 and H3N8, is a highly contagious respiratory disease that's becoming more prevalent. It spreads quickly through sniffing, licking, barking, coughing, or even contaminated surfaces like dog park toys or water bowls.

Symptoms can range from a persistent cough and runny nose to fever, lethargy, and loss of appetite. In severe cases, it can even lead to pneumonia and be life-threatening, especially for puppies, senior dogs, or those with underlying health issues.

Why vaccinate against CIV?

Highly Contagious: It spreads rapidly in places where dogs gather.
Reduces Severity: Even if your dog is exposed, vaccination can significantly lessen the severity and duration of illness.
Prevents Outbreaks: Vaccinating helps protect the wider dog community in Burien and beyond!
If your dog frequently interacts with other dogs at dog parks, groomers, boarding facilities, or training classes, the Canine Influenza vaccine is highly recommended.

Is Your Dog Protected from "Kennel Cough"? Let's Talk Bordetella! πŸ—£οΈπŸΎ

Even if your dog doesn't spend much time in kennels, they can still be exposed to Bordetella – the primary cause of highly contagious "kennel cough"! This respiratory infection is easily spread anywhere dogs gather, like:

Dog parks
Groomers
Doggy daycare
Training classes
Even just a walk in a popular neighborhood where other dogs have been!
Symptoms can range from a harsh, hacking cough (which sounds like something is stuck in their throat) to sneezing, nasal discharge, and even lethargy. While often not life-threatening, it can be very uncomfortable for your pup and can lead to more serious secondary infections like pneumonia, especially in puppies, senior dogs, or those with compromised immune systems.

The good news? The Bordetella vaccine is highly effective in preventing or significantly reducing the severity of kennel cough! It helps your dog build immunity against this common bug.

Is the Bordetella vaccine right for your dog? If your dog interacts with other dogs at all, the answer is likely YES! Most boarding facilities, groomers, and doggy daycares require proof of this vaccination for good reason – to protect all the pups in their care.

Don't let kennel cough sideline your furry friend's fun! Let's keep those tails wagging and those lungs clear!

Protect Your Pup! 🐾 The Truth About Leptospirosis & Why Vaccination Matters

Living in Washington, especially with our beautiful PNW environment, means our dogs are often exposed to water and wildlife. But there's a hidden danger lurking: Leptospirosis.

This serious bacterial disease is spread through the urine of infected animals (like raccoons, rats, and opossums) and thrives in contaminated water and soil – think puddles, lakes, and even damp areas in your backyard. It can lead to severe kidney and liver damage, and sadly, can be fatal. Even worse, it's a zoonotic disease, meaning it can spread to humans!

Is your dog at risk? If your dog loves to:

Explore trails or wooded areas
Play in dog parks
Drink from puddles or natural water sources
Spend time outdoors, especially after rain..then they are!

The good news? The Leptospirosis vaccine is highly effective at preventing this devastating illness. It's a key part of preventative care that can save your dog's life and protect your family.

Don't wait until it's too late. Let's keep our Washington pups happy, healthy, and safe!

🚨 Protect Your Pup from Distemper, Parvo & More!

The DAPP vaccine isn't just one shot; it's vital protection against four severe canine diseases:

Distemper: Can cause debilitating respiratory, gastrointestinal, and neurological symptoms, often fatal.

Adenovirus: Leads to infectious hepatitis, affecting the liver.
Parvovirus: Highly contagious, causing severe vomiting and diarrhea, especially dangerous for puppies.
Parainfluenza: Contributes to kennel cough.

These diseases are prevalent, and the DAPP vaccine is your dog's best defense. Don't risk your dog's health – ensure they're vaccinated!

Understanding Feline Leukemia (FeLV) Transmission & Prevention.

Many cat owners don't realize how easily FeLV can spread – through saliva (sharing food/water bowls, mutual grooming), blood, and even from mother to kitten. This makes the FeLV vaccine an incredibly important shield, especially if your cat goes outdoors, lives in a multi-cat household, or has contact with cats of unknown FeLV status.

Prevention is key to avoiding this progressive and often fatal disease.

Why is FVRCP so important?

Comprehensive Protection: Guards against a trifecta of widespread illnesses.
Highly Contagious: These viruses spread easily, even to indoor cats.
Severe Symptoms: Unvaccinated cats can suffer immensely.

June is Vaccine Month!

Protecting our furry friends starts with a simple step: vaccinations!🐾

Just like humans, our beloved cats and dogs are susceptible to a variety of serious, even deadly, diseases. Vaccines act as a shield, preparing their immune systems to fight off common and dangerous illnesses like rabies, distemper, parvovirus, and feline leukemia.

Why are vaccines so crucial?

Disease Prevention: They dramatically reduce the risk of your pet contracting and suffering from debilitating and often fatal diseases.
Community Health: Vaccinated pets help create "herd immunity," protecting vulnerable animals (like puppies and kittens) who are too young to be fully vaccinated.
Peace of Mind: Knowing your pet is protected allows you to enjoy their companionship without constant worry about preventable illnesses.
Cost-Effective: The cost of vaccinations is far less than the cost of treating these serious diseases, which can be extensive and may not even be successful.
Don't wait until it's too late! Talk to your veterinarian about the appropriate vaccination schedule for your cat or dog. It's an essential part of responsible pet ownership and the best way to ensure they live a long, healthy, and happy life by your side. ❀️
