Don’t leave your pets behind if an emergency arises! If it isn’t safe for you, it isn’t safe for your pets. They deserve to be safe, too!

Make a proper plan for your pets before an emergency happens. You made the choice to get a pet, so you are also responsible for their safety.

For many of us, pets are one of our most precious asset.🥰❤️ Today is National Pet Fire Safety Day. It’s a great opportunity to take time to think about, learn and plan how to keep your fur babies safe in case a fire.🔥

Please help first responders know to look out for pets by placing a pet fire safety window cling at entrances. They are available at many fire houses.

We have become aware of a circulating scam where pet owners are contacted by individuals falsely claiming to represent our shelter. These individuals state that we have the owner’s missing pet in our care and request money, allegedly for the pet’s immediate medical expenses. They may ask owners to send funds via platforms like Apple Pay or Venmo, while falsifying their caller ID to appear as though the call is coming from our shelter.

Rest assured, the Fairfax County Animal Shelter does not ask for funds over the phone or in advance of picking up a lost pet. If you receive any suspicious communications claiming to be from us, please do not hesitate to hang up and contact us directly.

We are fortunate that it was cooler today!! Hope everyone got to get out and enjoyed the cooler temperatures.

The temps will be climbing right back into the danger zones 🥵 in the coming days. Here are symptoms and treatments for dehydration. If you suspect dehydration is SEVERE, give some cool (not cold) water and get your dog to a vet.

Not sure whether dehydration is mild or severe? ALWAYS error on the side of caution that might just save your dogs life; get your dog seen by a vet.

BLUE GREEN ALGAE KILLS. Unfortunately, every summer there are sad stories about dogs dying from blue-green algae poisoning. ☠️

Don’t let an anticipated day of summer fun turn into tragedy. Many pet parents are not aware of the life threatening dangers of blue-green algae poisoning.

How to prevent blue-green algae poisoning: Don’t let your dogs drink from stagnant ponds, lakes or bodies of water that have bluish-green scum/slime on the surface or around the edges. Blue-green algae can stick to your pet’s fur and be ingested when they clean themselves, making them sick.

Be aware of the signs of blue-green algae poisoning:
Seizures
Panting
Excessive drooling
Respiratory failure
Diarrhea
Disorientation
Vomiting
Liver failure
Ultimately death

If you suspect blue-green algae poisoning seek veterinary attention immediately. Death can occur quickly.

Update June 30 - Drogon is SAFE and back with his family!

Please keep an eye out for a large black lab / Great Dane mix in the Burke area of Fairfax County. He escaped June 19 from pet sitter and is already in flight mode. Do not chase, follow, or approach him as he will run away. Stop and call 703-861-1810 or 703-691-2131 immediately. His family returned from vacation and is very worried about him. Sightings are crucial to reuniting him with them. He will be searching for food, water, and shelter due to the heat. Last confirmed seen near White Oaks Elementary/ Shiplett Blvd.

Please read and share...and spay & neuter 🙏🙏🙏

We try to catch your attention with a bit of humor. 🤷‍♀️

Sadly, there is nothing humorous about the serious impact of not spaying and neutering your pets. For many pets, when the decision is made to not spay and neuter…..it ends up being a deadly decision for literally thousands and thousands of pets.

The hard realities of not spaying and neutering:
1. Rescues are full
2. No kill shelters are full
3. Adoptions are at an all time low
4. Intake is at an all time high
5. Euthanasia for space is at an all time high

The real, kinder, humane solution seems SO obvious and yet people STILL are not spaying and neutering their pets. 😔 What is it they don’t get? It’s not rocket science.😑 Please, please be part of the solution and not part of the problem. PLEASE SPAY AND NEUTER YOUR PETS.

⁉️DO YOU HAVE A DOG THAT SHOULD BE SPAYED OR NEUTERED BUT NEED FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE⁉️ Please contact The Furever Project, [email protected], and let us see if we can help you with spay/neuter financial assistance.
