Thank you, Cafe Kindred for spotlighting Skye today!
Meet Skye, the sleek, grey dog who is the belle of the ball! Skye weighs 60 lbs. and has a beautiful grey coat. She is very enthusiastic about exercise and play. Skye loves going for a run and chasing balls, but she loves delicious treats even more! Skye is currently undergoing treatment for microfilaria, a heartworm larva. However, it is not contagious to people or other animals, and the shelter covers the cost of her treatment. Although she is currently restricted from exercising, Skye looks forward to the day she can run freely again. Skye hasn't been comfortable around other dogs at the shelter, so she would do best in a home where she is the only pet. This friendly and beautiful gal is looking for a loving home. Consider adopting sweet Skye today!
Exciting news! Skye is eligible for an Adoption Audition! This 5-day, no-strings-attached trial adoption period allows you to take Skye home and see if she's the perfect fit for your family. Interested? Visit the Fairfax Campus of the Department of Animal Sheltering during open hours and talk to one of our Customer Care staff to start the process!

The Fairfax Campus (4500 West Ox Road, Fairfax) is open Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 12 to 5 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays from 12 to 7 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Skye's id is A0055523352. For more information on our adoption process, including requirements and fees, visit www.fairfaxcounty.gov/animalshelter/adopt.

🚨 Help Us Make Space for Hurricane-Affected Pets: Fee-Waived Adoptions for Dogs 45 lbs and Over, Oct. 10-13! 🚨

Last week, we were thrilled to work with one of our rescue partners, Homeward Trails Animal Rescue, to welcome a couple of dogs from a North Carolina shelter impacted by Hurricane Helene. Today, FCAS will welcome several dogs from a shelter experiencing overcrowding due to the storm. The pets coming to us were already available for adoption at these shelters, not those waiting to be reunited with their families.

With Hurricane Milton's landfall today, FCAS wants to create more space in our shelters to bring in more pets from hurricane-affected areas. To assist in this effort, we're waiving adoption fees for all dogs 45 lbs. and over from Thursday, Oct. 10, through Sunday, Oct. 13.

Here’s how our community can help:

🏠 Adopt: You can meet our adoptable pets at both our shelter locations: the Michael R. Frey Campus, 4500 West Ox Rd. in Fairfax, and the Lorton Campus, 8875 Lorton Rd. in Lorton. See all our pets on our website: fairfaxcounty.gov/animalshelter/adopt

You can also take a pet on an Adoption Audition! All dogs, as well as select other species (such as cats and rabbits), are eligible for a five-day, no-strings-attached adoption audition! Learn more: fairfaxcounty.gov/animalshelter/adoption-audition-program

🐾 Donate: We keep our Amazon wish lists updated with supplies and items that are helpful to have at our shelters. You can also make a monetary contribution to the Friends of the Fairfax County Animal Shelter, our nonprofit fundraising partner, which provides funds for lifesaving medical care for our shelter pets. Hello. I have a client who needs to rehome his cat. Please read and share. If anyone is interested please send me a pm and I can get you in contact with the owner. Breeze is sweet. Thank you for reading and sharing the below from her dad 🙏🐈🐾

“Breeze is a 7-years old domestic with medium long brown hair, already spayed. In good health though a little overweight at 28 lbs so she’s been on a wet food diet of Orijen Regional Red cat food (she also eats the dry version of this brand). Her last wellness checkup and rabies shot was in May 2024. She was bought from a local pet store in Severna Park,MD and grew up around a border collie with no problems. She also was around our other, older female cat for a time but that other cat was aggressive towards Breeze so we kept them apart. I don’t know how Breeze would react to other cats now, but she doesn’t seem aggressive by nature. She does like to scratch furniture covers (could never get Breeze interested in scratching posts). But she is quiet and loves attention.”

Facebook family we come to you with a very special fundraiser for some very special dogs. Ava and Charlotte are both long term foster dogs due to Ava’s mega esophagus and severe allergies and Charlotte is a feral dog that’s come so far in her time with us but still refuses to allow anyone to touch her. Unfortunately in June their foster family’s dad had a fall from 2 stories and was injured. Loosing his income while recovering has put the family under much strain and caused many struggles and hardships. The biggest is loosing the roof over their heads.

Their foster family was very happy to have found a place to go but that joy was quickly overshadowed when they learned their foster dogs wouldn’t be allowed there with them. Charlotte and Ava’s foster family has decided they will not leave these dogs behind with no place to go and will do whatever it takes
to follow through on their commitment to these dogs and ensure the safety and wellbeing of Ava and Charlotte and have decided they are willing to live in a camper if that’s what it takes.

We have all heard or said it ourselves. We say we would let everything go to keep our pets. Well in this case they are willing to do that for their foster dogs. Please help us make sure they can by participating in this fundraising raffle that will make sure Ava and Charlotte have a place to call home.

Take a chance on this beautiful MK Leather tote and diamond stud earrings.

Spots are $10 each! Make sure to put the # you want when you send your $10 and ear mark it for Charlotte and Ava.

Can Dogs Learn by Observation? You bet!
Social learning is an efficient and fast way to transfer information from more experienced (often, older) to less experienced (younger) individuals.
Studies show that dogs learn by observation both from other dogs AND humans.
After observing a human releasing a ball by manipulating a lever mounted on a box, dogs were MORE successful in also using the lever to achieve the same goal.
Adult dogs are known to be able to remember and re-enact human actions after a delay of 1 hour and some of them even after delays up to 24 hours. Whoa! Better watch how you close the refrigerator next time!

September is here, and for this month's , Chief Davis of the Fairfax County Police Department chose to highlight Brownie!

Brownie’s perfect day would include chasing toys, taking in all the smells on walks and curling up on your lap for a snooze. His previous family told us that he's a cuddlebug and got along well with young children in the home.

Brownie has some neurological challenges that affect his mobility in his back legs. Despite this, he gets around very well and is a happy 7-year-old! He’s also been enjoying hydrotherapy sessions with our friends at Aquatic Paws to strengthen his hind legs.

If Brownie sounds like the pup for you, stop by our Michael R. Frey Campus to meet him! You can see his adoption profile at fairfaxcounty.gov/animalshelter/adopt.

We have 10 tickets left for our upcoming event that's on Tuesday. Can you help us get this event link in front of your friends and family? These last 10 tickets means $300 for us. $300 would cover TNR, ear tip, vaccinations and flea treatment for three feral cats..... stoping the cycle that would lead to 1000s more kittens.
Help us raise some much needed funds while having a great time!
