Safe Haven Critter Rescue

Safe Haven Critter Rescue Thank you for your support! We will be officially closing our doors in October 2022. We rescue, rehab, and rehome reptiles, amphibians and small animals.
(2)

We are 100% volunteer run! Many animals are housed in trusted foster homes. Though we are small, we do our best to provide this much needed service through all of Vermont. We have a small online Facebook shop with used equipment. All proceeds from any purchase of used equipment goes right back into the rescue and helps pay for medical bills, food, and other supplies we may need.

Our friend Mochi went to a new home last week in hopes of making friends with the resident rabbit. However, at no fault of his own, the other rabbit was not a fan.

After seeing how he did with this interaction, we actually are more confident he will do well with another rabbit (if they accept him!). However, this bun was not the match.

Mochi is looking for a new foster home or adoptive home. If you're interested, please reach out! He's a sweet little guy who is very easygoing. His muttonchops and beautiful blue eyes are hard to resist! He was found as a stray, so his age is unknown, but we think he's on the younger side. He is neutered and a great litterbox user. Not a huge chewer (unless we're talking pinecones). He comes with all equipment- including a 4x4 pen, carrier, toys, and litterbox. Message us and set up a time to meet this sweet boy

πŸ’š Peridot πŸ’š the veiled chameleon is on the hunt for her new home.

She has been vet examined and has UVB lights, heat, and a 4x2x2 screened enclosure included in her adoption fee!

Peridot is around 2 years old. She came to Safe Haven when her previous caretaker was leaving for school. She has warmed up amazingly to her current foster family and we can't wait to see her in her new permanent home!

Adoptions number 48, 49, and 50 happened this week! Both Susana and brothers Jack and Mattie went home!

"Jack and Mattie took to their new home immediately! I've never seen any critter get so comfortable so fast! I've been hanging out with them as much as I can. I can sort of give headpats to both boys now. And Mattie will come up next to me and chew hay while trying to figure out what I'm doing with my switch or laptop. Its really cute! He will run away if I try to pet him but he likes to hang out next to me and I love it. Piggleworth was a little freaked out when the boys first came in. He wasnt so sure where these new pig sounds were coming from. But he's already come around and now sings with them in the mornings or when I come home. Its the best greeting ever :) I'm gonna give them a bit more time of this positive interactions and then try a floor introduction. The rabbits have both come up to the new boys cage and they seem TOTALLY okay with the bunnies. The female, Bunelope, was uninterested after the first few sniffs but the male, Antonio, has been sleeping next to their cage."

Congrats to all!!

We currently have three cuties available for adoption right now! Peridot, Mochi, and Cedar. 4 adoptions are pending after last week's event, and we just have 2 on medical holds. Please message us with any questions!

We are not doing any further intakes at this time. We are working toward being able to close our doors (hoping to reopen in the future, but the time frame is unknown) as a break is desperately needed. Everything we have leftover after‐ monetarily and equipment wise- will be heading to HerpHaven Reptile Rescue and Sanctuary, they are fantastic and if you are looking for a reptile rescue to support in the meantime, we highly recommend them!

Financially, we actually are doing ok. We also have plenty of fosters for the most part. The limit is what I as director can handle. The many facets contributing to animal welfare issues (and beyond) in the state and world are overwhelming. The system is both knowingly causing harm, and highly resistant to change. The selling and trading of animals as commodities doesn't seem to have an end in sight. I will never stop looking for ways to rally support for these little beings who are in need of a hand, to help bolster their voice and their stories. If we all do a little, we can slowly tip those scales.

We are approaching 50 adoptions, and I am so very proud of that number! That is 50 lives that we, together, as a community- saved. Knowing that I was able to take part in making a difference in the lives of over 50 animals who may not have had a chance otherwise is so important to me. I hope to return to this in the future, recovered from burnout and ready to take on whatever comes my way with the community's help.

We will continue to post until everyone has found their new home!

THANK YOU to everyone who showed up yesterday to our first ever pop up event at the mall! We were all too busy to snap photos during, but we had lots of traffic, lots of great conversations, and we've declared the event a success!

Shoutout to: Cathy and Jailen for putting on some awesome presentations and helping with setup and takedown, Saturn for keeping tabs on equipment purchasing, Eva for watching over the small mammals and moderating interactions, Lisa for talking reptiles and bringing her own alumni as an ambassador, and Tasha for helping with setup! Chase, Abbey, and Cody also brought their fosters to and from the event making everything easier on us!

No animals went home same day but we have a handful of applications to go through, and plenty of equipment sales! Next time will be even better with everything we learned- hope to see you there!

8/2/22 LOOSE RABBIT in Burlington

https://www.facebook.com/seaver
8/2 9:30pm - I just saw what looked like a friendly albeit scared lop eared rabbit in the Feeding Chittenden parking lot across from Taco Gordo on North Winooski in the old north end of Burlington. Dark grey with a white chest. I tried to get closer, but it was skittish. Hope you are just out for a warm evening stroll and aren’t lost.

Gertrude has the most adorable little face, and she's looking for a foster! She's gained so much strength over the last few months, that now her care isn't so different from any other leopard gecko that we've had. She is able to hunt largely unassisted, and gets around very well now.

Gertrude has shown to be very adaptable to new situations and has even come with us to North Country Animal League for the last couple weeks to talk to kids about reptile care!

She is waiting on October to come to be fully adoptable- our vet wants to take x rays then to confirm that her bones have returned to normal after the effects of MBD. However, she would love to go to a foster home (perhaps one that plans to adopt her down the line?) while she waits!

Gertrude will be at the UMall this Saturday to meet in person!

Some happy news this week- Blackberry has been adopted!

Blackberry took a couple shots at new homes over the past couple months, but they didn't work out. Now he's found his new home- and a new friend! They spent a few weeks getting to know each other and it seems like a great match. Congrats, Blackberry (and Bunny, who also just gained a companion πŸ₯°)!

Mochi is an adorably tiny bundle of fluff who will be available to meet at the UMall less than a week from today on August 6th!

This little guy is an excellent litter box user, hay connoisseur, veggie enthusiast, and is gentle with his toys (not a big chewer). He gets the zoomies when it's time for food and is a treat puzzle master. At just 2.5 lbs, what more could you ask for in a bunny?

He requires a 4x4 pen and needs something non slip under his feet, like carpet or a blanket, to feel at ease.

Come meet him on Saturday!

We have excellent news to share- Frida has been adopted!

After spending around a year and a half in foster, her foster parents realized that they couldn't part with her. She is now living permanently with another turtle. We are so very happy that she has a permanent, safe, loving home!

Congrats, Frida!

Though not quite available for adoption yet, Pedro will be available to meet (and possibly bring home to foster) at the UMall on the 6th, one week and one day from today!

He's a little older at 6-7 years old. Though he doesn't seem to be in poor health, he can be a little handling avoidant, and we are seeing how he does with some time and improved husbandry before sending him to a new home! He will be available for foster-to-adopt at the event πŸ’•

An update on Eevi (FKA Ocelot!)... doesn't she look bigger already!?

"Eevi has become such a wonderful member of our family, my partner and I are both head over heels in love with her! She has such a sweet, tenacious and curious personality, and this has only grown as she gets more comfortable with us. She’s such a gentle little lady, but certainly gives us a run for our money when she races around the apartment and tries to scale the walls to get to bask on the windowsills!
..Having Eevi has been such a wonderful opportunity to learn about beardies, watch her own unique personality grow, and give her all the love in the world! Thank you both for taking such good care of her, it means the world to me that she had a good start since coming into your care, which gave her the foundations to be the best little friend I could have ever asked for! Meet Peridot!

Peridot is a veiled chameleon, approximately 2 years old. She is looking for her new home!

Chameleons are awesome creatures. Native to Yemen and Saudi Arabia, they have some specific habitat requirements. She lives in 2x2x4' screened enclosure, with live plants to keep the humidity at a healthy level. Chameleons in general can be quite fragile and aren't big fans of being handled. They use their clawed feet to perch and climb and need a variety of sturdy perches and branches.

Veiled chameleons are primarily insectivores and do best eating a varied diet of commercial feeder insects, though this species has been known to occasionally consume plant material as well. Chameleons do not drink from bowls, but instead from food and droplets that form on leaves in their habitat. Thus, regular misting (and potentially a dripper or timer system in addition) is required! Supplements are also a necessary part of chameleon diet and health.

Peridot also requires UVB light and a heat source, which she will come with!

We do not have an enclosure to go home with her at this time- but are more than happy to give suggestions on what to get if you are interested in adopting Peridot!

We said goodbye to sweet Pine late last week.

We were hoping that we'd be able to help her pass the blockage in her GI tract, but ultimately it became clear that not only were her muscles paralyzed, but her digestive system as well. Without vital organs being functional, and her being so tiny and weak (just 14 grams), there was nothing that could be done except helping her pass before it inevitably became worse. We do not believe she had any sensation below her shoulders where the blockage was, so her suffering was very minimal. Whether she had a blockage first or if she sustained an injury was unclear.

Nonetheless, she will be missed, and we are so grateful to have gotten the chance to give her some love and TLC ❀ thank you to Dr. Bisson at Shelburne Vet for giving us guidance and giving her a chance.

Mochi is officially on the hunt for his new home!

This little bun weighs in at around 2 pounds. He was found as a stray in Burlington, so we don't have any info about his past or his age.

He's a sweetheart and is tolerant of pets and being picked up. He's very smart and enjoys his treat puzzles! He's not a picky eater by any means. His litterbox skills are good.

He is recently neutered. He may need a couple weeks for hormones to fully settle before being introduced to another bunny.

Mochi is also looking for a foster home!

Cedar is on the lookout for her new home πŸ”

She is somewhere around 8-9 months old. She's definitely nervous around people, but with some time and trust building, she could get more used to regular handling.

She will require an 18x18x24 or equivalent tank in her new home! She eats repashy crested gecko food as well as occasional bugs.

07/06/2022

Great news! Mochi's bloodwork came back and his neuter has been completed.

One level related to his liver was slightly elevated, but just a hair over normal range. The input and output of liquids has reduced significantly over the past week, and seems to be at more of a normal level.

Our highest suspicion is that he are something toxic, whether a plant or something else, while he was outside as a stray, which put stress on his body (possibly the liver) until it was flushed out of his system.

Not every plant is safe for bunnies to eat, and as a stray domestic rabbit, they haven't learned from other rabbits or gained experience about what is safe to consume. They have never had a reason to be cautious about what to eat since it was pre screened and brought to them by a human caretaker. Just one of many reasons that rabbits belong indoors and in homes.

Excess consumption of water and excess urination could be a sign that your rabbit or other small mammal is ill, or ingested something they weren't supposed to. Get them into the vet as soon as possible if these behaviors change without explaination!

He is doing well after his neuter, if not mildly annoyed by his (very cute) cone of shame.
