We are often asked, how do you find a reputable dog breeder? It is certainly important to find a great breeder to ensure you come home with a healthy, well-rounded pet. Here is what to look for!

* Why they are breeding: Reputable breeders have one goal in mind. That goal is attempting to produce healthy, and physically and behaviorally stable dogs that meet the breed standard.

* Health testing: Health screenings, such as hip X-rays and blood tests can confirm that a dog is free from disease. While that does not guarantee that the dog won’t produce that defect in its offspring, it certainly improves those chances. DNA or genetic tests can determine if a dog is a carrier for a particular disease or disorder.

*Puppies' environment: Pay particular attention to the environment and the dogs themselves. Does the house or kennel look clean? Do the puppies appear to be in good weight, lively, and vigorous? The mother should be there, interacting with her puppies, and appearing comfortable and settled.

*Puppy contract: Reputable breeders require buyers to sign a contract, whether they are acquiring a show dog or a family pet, though many dogs are both. The contract will outline the basics about the puppy – including the names of both parents and the puppy’s AKC registration number – and will always include a return-to-breeder clause.

*Volume of puppies: The kennel is not putting out high volumes of pups, but rather considers their breeding dogs to be family members and treats them with loving care. The breeder should encourage you to spend time with one or both parents on your visit.

*Veterinary care: They have a good working relationship with a respected veterinarian who examines each pup and provides immunizations and parasite control according to medical standards. The breeder should readily provide a complete medical record on each pup.

Did you know that obesity shortens a pet's life and makes them more likely to develop disease?

Obese pets develop an increased risk for: many types of cancer, diabetes, heart disease and hypertension, osteoarthritis and a faster degeneration of affected joints, urinary bladder stones, and more.

On the other hand, more unexplained/quick onset obesity may be an indicator of disease, such as hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid gland) or Cushing’s disease (overactive adrenal glands).

Take a look at this chart to see if your pet could use a diet.

Update Saturday AM: burrow has been trapped and is safe at home!

Attention! Lost cat!

One of our clients kitty’s got lose in our parking lot and ran into the woods in between us and Stephen’s Elementary School. We looked for him but he was very scared and hiding. A trap has been set. His name is Burrow and he is a 1 year old short haired orange tabby cat.

If anyone spots him, please contact his owners right away at 859-609-1787 or 859-912-2133.

Donation Drive for Hurricane Victims in TN & NC this week!

This week, Monday to Friday, we will be collecting donations for the victims of the devastating hurricane.

Donations can be dropped off anytime during our open hours (Mon, Wed, Thurs 8am-6pm, Tues, Fri 8am-4pm). We will then take the donations to a local family who is taking a trip down to deliver donations DIRECTLY to the humans and animals that were affected.

If you would prefer to send donations from Amazon, we have created an Amazon wishlist where items are sent directly to the clinic: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/O7KOHSK1FUOH?ref_=wl_share

The list of items needed on the image comes directly from those who are currently in the area. Please do not bring clothing. The items in BOLD are the most needed at this time.

Any of our clients that drop off donations will be entered to win a $100 credit to the clinic. We hope that you will help us to support these people and animals when they need us the most! Thank you ❤
