Flea and tick season is soon to be upon us!! This photo shows a patient that has tested positive for Lyme Disease. These are our annual 4DX Heartworm and Tick Borne Diseases tests. Each year with their annual vaccines we complete one of these tests.

The symptoms of Lyme Disease include lameness, swollen lymph nodes, joint swelling, fatigue, and loss of appetite. In addition, serious kidney complications have been associated with Lyme disease in dogs.

Please make sure your pets are protected by keeping them on monthly flea and tick prevention. We offer Bravecto, Nexgard, and Nexgard Plus for dogs and Bravecto, Nexgard Plus, and Revolution for cats. If your prefer a different prescription that we don't carry in clinic, we can get you a prescription for anything you like through our online store.

Arthritis commonly affects older and middle-aged pets. However, the condition is not limited to these age groups and younger animals can also suffer from the disease. When arthritis eventually causes changes in the joint which result in pain, this often becomes apparent by changes in the animal’s behavior – the primary symptoms of the disease.

Because arthritis commonly develops with age, pet owners sometimes confuse changes in their animal’s behavior as normal age-related changes (such as a decrease in play), whereas in fact, the animal might be suffering quite severe arthritic pain.

We have some great options for arthritis in both cats and dogs! Our favorite in cats is a month long injection called Solensia which has shown some fantastic results. For dogs, we love Rejensa and Librela.

February is Pet Dental Health Month !

Do you know the signs that your pet needs a dental? 🐶🪥

When it comes to identifying whether your pet needs dental care, it's important to be observant of their oral health. Here are some common signs that may indicate a need for dental attention:

1. **Bad Breath**: Persistent bad breath (halitosis) might be a sign of oral bacteria buildup or potential infection in your pet's mouth.

2. **Tartar Buildup**: If you notice yellow or brown tartar accumulating on your pet's teeth, it suggests a need for dental cleaning and care.

3. **Red or Swollen Gums**: Inflamed or swollen gums are a clear indicator of potential dental issues and should be addressed promptly.

4. **Difficulty Eating or Chewing**: Pets experiencing pain or discomfort in their mouth may exhibit difficulty while eating or chewing their food.

5. **Loose or Missing Teeth**: Loose or missing teeth can indicate advanced dental problems and require professional evaluation.

6. **Excessive Drooling**: Unusual, persistent drooling may be a sign of dental discomfort or an oral issue that needs attention.

7. **Pawing at the Mouth**: If your pet frequently paws at their mouth, it could signal discomfort or pain related to their dental health.

8. **Bleeding from the Mouth**: Any signs of bleeding from the mouth should be taken seriously and promptly addressed by a veterinarian.

9. **Changes in Behavior or Appetite**: Any notable changes in your pet's behavior or appetite could be linked to underlying dental problems and should be assessed by a professional.

If you notice any of these signs, please contact us! Regular dental care and attention are crucial for maintaining their overall health and well-being.

Did you know that obesity shortens a pet's life and makes them more likely to develop disease?

Obese pets develop an increased risk for: many types of cancer, diabetes, heart disease and hypertension, osteoarthritis and a faster degeneration of affected joints, urinary bladder stones, and more.

On the other hand, more unexplained/quick onset obesity may be an indicator of disease, such as hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid gland) or Cushing’s disease (overactive adrenal glands).

Learn why you should spay or neuter your pet! 🐾

We offer competitive and affordable prices for our spay and neutering surgeries. We spay and neuter cats and dogs only. The price includes an e-collar, injectable pain medicine during surgery, pain medicine to go home, the anesthesia, etc.

Dr. Burcham typically recommends spaying and neutering between 6-11 months of age depending on the pets breed, size, and s*x. If your pet has never been to our clinic before, we do require a pre-operative appointment to establish you as a client and make sure your pet is healthy and a good candidate for surgery.

Call us at 859-795-0606 to inquire about prices and scheduling!

Checkout these Microchip Statistics! It is so important to have your pets microchipped whether you think they will ever get loose or not, whether they wear a collar and tag or not...

🐾 1 in 3 family pets will get lost in their lifetime.
🐾 Only 6 in 10 microchips are registered.
🐾 6 to 8 million pets enter U.S. shelters each year. Most are lost pets.
🐾 Only 3-4% of dogs, and less than 1% of cats, arriving at shelters are microchipped.
🐾 Microchipped dogs are 2x more likely to be reunited with their family.
🐾 Microchipped cats are 20x more likely to be reunited with their family.

We offer microchips through petlink.net which offers free lifetime registration. The microchip is implanted just like giving a vaccine, just a slighter larger needle. The microchip itself is the size of a grain of rice. It can be done during any appointment or surgery.

Call us at 859-795-0606 to get your pet on the books to receive a microchip!

Wondering what is the best food to feed your furry friend? Our top 3 recommendations are Purina Pro Plan, Hills Science Diet, and Royal Canin. All 3 of these brands have cat and dog formulas that vary based on your pets age, size, breed, activity level, etc.

These foods that have gone through AAFCO feeding trials and these companies have been around the longest and employ veterinary nutritionists and pay the money it takes to formulate and test their foods.

Another big concern in the veterinary world is feeding grain inclusive food. Healthy grains are good for your pet’s heart, which means a grain-free diet can lead to heart problems due to a lack of certain nutrients. In fact, recent reports indicate that grain-free diets play a major role in pets with canine dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), a condition that causes weakened heart contractions and poor pumping ability.

Did you know that performing routine ear cleaning at home can help prevent recurrent ear infections? Cleaning your pet's ears every 1-4 weeks depending on their wax buildup can be an incredible help to their ear health.

We sell regular ear wash here at the clinic which you can buy anytime. To clean their ear, you simply fill the ear canal with ear wash, massage the base of the ear, and wipe out the debris/excess ear wash with a cotton ball or a piece of gauze. If your dog goes swimming, ear wash should be used after each swimming session to help dry out the ears and prevent moisture and bacteria buildup which can lead to infections.

Call us at 859-795-0606 to pickup some ear wash today for you cat or dog
