Maya turns 10 months old today. When I first met her a couple months ago, she was wild, constantly running, grabbing everything she could reach, biting hands. She has totally transformed and is a joy to be with. She loves learning new behaviors. All this has been accomplished through “game-play.”

I was talking with another dog trainer the other day and he asked me, “How often are you breaking up dog fights?” Dog fights almost never happen. I reward the dogs for good behavior and good choices. Once they pack-walk a few times, they develop a calm confidence and have no need to be on guard. This video demonstrates the calmness I am describing.

Welcome to the pack, Carson.

Guinness came to us 4 weeks ago because of debilitating fear. He was able to make real improvements once he felt safe and the cycle of fear was broken. He was especially fearful of any objects lifted into the air, such as a lacrosse stick, and meeting men for the first time.

He has been able to conquer every challenge and his confidence continues to build. Just a few pictures of Guinness mastering his environment.

We squeezed in a great pack-walk before the rain came. Thank you, Mary Tracy, for combining our packs today.

It gives me such joy to see these dogs bonding with one another, learning new behaviors and being stimulated socially, especially knowing what their day would have been like if they weren't out with us. I learned more from you, Rhonda, in the few hours we spent yesterday, than I ever could have on my own. I am grateful to Rhonda, Vermont Dog Pack and My Dog Camp!

This story has a happy ending. Laura came to assist with the release. The mallard flew right back to the flock floating in the cove.

Green Bandana DUCKS, Yep... "ducks."
It was only 10F when P**i and I were walking in Oakledge Park this morning. I was shocked to see a duck FROZEN to a rock.

It turns out that a mallard had settled into a small puddle on top of a flat rock that had frozen solid while she rested there. The bird's entire belly was frozen into the half inch of ice. She must have been there since last night when the temperature dropped. The duck's feet were free and the wings were flapping madly as it attempted to get loose. There was a young women there, Abby, who had noticed it first. Abby and I made a plan to free it.

Abby stood by to protect the bird from anything (i.e. dogs) while I bolted back to the house for warm water. I brought my step son back with me as we were going to need extra hands.

Once back, we covered the ducks eyes to keep it settled down. Abby grasped the body to support her while I drizzled warm water onto the rock. For about 15 minutes, I pried feathers loose with my finger tips as the water loosened the ice. "SUCCESS!!! She's off the rock."

The feathers on the belly and breast were either encased in ice or soaking wet so we didn't release her. We wrapped the duck in towels and brought her home while we figured out the best course of action. I'm familiar with dog first-aid but not waterfowl. I called my daughter for advice because of her knowledge of animal science. Laura advised us to contacted a Vermont wildlife rehabilitator.

The rehabilitator advised us to ensure the feathers were 100% dry before releasing the mallard. For now she is inside, in a large storage tote with a dry towel, dish of water and a small amount of kibble (dry dog food). She appears to be in good shape with most of her feathers intact and normal function of all moving parts.

If all looks good tomorrow, our little friend will be released into the open water very near the spot she was found. What a day! As Abby put it, "I didn't think I'd be rescuing a frozen duck when I got up this morning."

I cannot decide if the dogs are enjoying the free time ("prey drive": running, chasing playing) or the actual pack walk ("social drive": moving along with purpose in tight formation) more. After 4 or 5 minutes of playing, they come back and sit next to me, eager to resume the walk. Either way, they are having a blast.

The importance of this structured walk with your dog cannot be overstated. The mental exercise and bonding are the greatest benefits, for both you and your dog. (note: I disagree with the author's statement of "dominance" and would substitute "leadership" in its place.)

Bojangles was in the woods for 2 hours this morning. The first 30 minutes was teaching/learning the commands and expectations. The rest of the time we covered trails and did some bush-whacking too. She did great with the other dogs we encountered on the trail. Once more solo session and then I'll add her to the pack. Welcome to the Green Bandana Family, Bojangles!
