Albus is staying for a board and train to work on his pretty intense reactivity towards people and dogs. This is his third day, and the first day that he was exposed to any triggers after letting him settle in a bit. I have high hopes for him, and I’m excited to see him progress!

New Information On The “Hunger Gene” In Labs And Flat-Coats

Researchers have unraveled more information about the genetic POMC mutation that makes some Labrador Retrievers perpetually hungry. For one, the mutation has an allele frequency of 12% in Labs and of 60% in Flat-Coated Retrievers. These are the only two breeds in which the mutation has been found despite surveying more than 40 other breeds.

Dogs with one copy of the mutated gene have increased weight, body condition score, and food motivation. Dogs with two copies of the mutated gene have even higher weight, body condition score, and food motivation.

Because only 4% of Labs are homozygous for (have two copies of) the mutated gene, no homozygous dogs were used in the study. In a comparison of wild type (no mutated POMC genes) and heterozygous (one mutated POMC gene) in which the dogs were allowed to eat as much as they wanted, the heterozygotes ate more than the wild type dogs, but the difference was not statistically significant. Cash is coming along great! He’s a happy, motivated puppy that is a joy to be around.

Uzi is pretty rusty, so I’m refreshing her retrieving skills. Always more than happy to work 🖤

When you revolve your whole life around dogs, it looks a little like this 🖤

Cooper has been with me for a little over a week and has been the best boy 🖤 I’ll be opening my schedule for a couple dogs in July, starting on the 15th!

For times when I’m busy and cannot supervise the puppy, (but don’t feel like putting her away) I let her have a lick mat. On this one, I put peanut butter, a little bit of coconut oil, her kibble, blueberries, and then froze it. I have about 4 of these made up and ready to go. She’s now napping quietly in crate 🖤

Tucker Day 3 Handsome boy is doing great! He’s been working on his manners while inside the crate, and when greeting people also. He tends to be a little over-exuberant when saying hi 🤪

About Me

Hello! My name is Hannah Doll, owner of Ideal Dog Cincinnati. I discovered my passion for animal training at a young age through equestrian sports. Over time, my interest grew and I delved into the science of animal training. I gained experience with professional dog training through shadowing under accomplished trainers which then led to me working as a trainer full time. One of my main hobbies outside of training dogs, is falconry. As a licensed falconer, I train and free fly birds of prey for hunting. Overall, I feel that these different training approaches encompass my unique view on training dogs and allows me to help create the ideal dog for your family.
