Losing a pet sucks, there is no other word for it. 2024 was rough.

In 2024, we had so many customer dogs and cats die, one right after another. I felt like every time I came into work, I was told about another one gone. I lost two dogs in a matter of two months, and the pain is literally torture.

Grief looks different on everyone. I chose to celebrate my girls with this beautiful, portrait tattoo. How do you celebrate your babies? What helps you with the grieving process?

RECALL UPDATE – February 17, 2025

Dear Customer,

We are writing to update you on the status of the voluntary recall we initiated in December 2024 on a limited production of Feline Turkey Recipe sold frozen in 2lb packages.

Our voluntary recall was instituted on December 24, 2024, following a report from the Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) that it had found H5N1 present in an opened bag of product. We were devastated to hear of the death of the cat that began the ODA’s investigation, and our hearts go out to the cat’s owner. Out of an abundance of caution and concern for the health and safety of our customers’ pets, we issued the voluntary recall and kept it open while regulatory agencies investigated the H5N1 contamination allegedly associated with the opened bag of our product.

We subsequently worked openly and transparently with ODA and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), who conducted a complete audit of our co-manufacturer’s facility. The FDA audit started in late December 2024 and concluded on February 7, 2025, when we met with representatives from FDA and ODA to review the audit’s findings.

The FDA’s audit did not contain any findings related to H5N1 or Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), and the FDA did not identify the source of the alleged contamination found in the opened bag of our product. Additionally, our product was never included in the FDA’s list of Recalls & Withdrawals, which can be found at https://www.fda.gov/animal-veterinary/safety-health/recalls-withdrawals. Upon the completion of FDA’s audit, we updated the status of our voluntary recall with ODA to “closed” and the recall has since been terminated.

We are deeply grateful for and appreciate the patience and support that you, your customers, and our partners have shown us during this process.

As a reminder, our products are manufactured in a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and FDA-regulated facility. As a USDA-approved facility, our co-manufacturer is required to meet strict hygiene, quality control, and safety regulations for processing meat and other ingredients used in pet food. USDA is onsite every day on every shift and has offices in each of the facilities. Our products are produced in facilities that comply with USDA standards, ensuring high-quality ingredients and safety for pets – even to the level for human-grade food standards. We only buy approved human-grade raw materials that we would serve to our own families. We carefully evaluate all the suppliers from whom we buy our high-quality products. We have robust quality control and quality assurance programs that include:

Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures (SSOP);
Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP);
Hazard Analysis & Critical Control Points (HACCP) Program;
Lot segregation; and
Human-grade High Pressure Processing (“HPP,” also known as High Pressure Pasteurization) standards for our pet food processing to inactivate bacterial and viral pathogens.
Consistent with the FDA’s recent directive to raw pet food manufacturers on January 17, 2025, we now consider H5N1 to be a known or reasonably foreseeable hazard and updated our food safety plan to strengthen our supply chain by requiring enhanced guarantees from suppliers that they are not supplying contaminated products. Naturally, we will continue to enforce strict hygiene, quality control, and safety regulations for processing our products. Nothing is more important to us than the safety of our products and that of our customers’ beloved pets.

Julz Animal Houz lost a beloved customer, the day after Christmas. Chumlee would have been ten this past week.

Chumlee and his dad have been huge supporters of Julz Animal Houz since we opened, ten years ago. He was so full of life and love, with the energy of ten English Bulldogs wrapped up in a very solid, strong and gorgeous body! He was loved by all staff over the years, and was always so happy to visit us. Chumlee was so full of life, right up to the end, and his loss will be felt for a very long time. Our hearts go out to his dad, Monti, who absolutely adored his bulldog boy.

Fly free Chum! Please take care of my babies that traveled that bridge before you.

We were waiting for a bit more information regarding the Northwest Naturals Cat food recall before we posted. As always, we take recalls seriously, and our hearts go out to the cat involved. Losing a pet is always gut wrenching.

A couple of rumored discrepancies have been confirmed, as stated in the attached article.

First, it was stated that the cat was strictly indoor, and couldn’t possibly have been exposed to H5N1 in the wild, that claim is false. We have obtained numerous pictures of the cat on trips with their owner; hiking, trips to the beach etc…so there was ample opportunity to have been exposed in the wild.

But the food tested positive Julz! Yes…but as we had expected, the food was tested not using proper protocol, and very clearly was exposed to outside elements. The Oregon Dept Of Agriculture tested an opened bag of food, a regulatory failure to say the least. Protocol states that all testing be done on a clean and closed bag, to eliminate the possibility of preventable cross contamination. This protocol was ignored. Myself and my colleagues have seen this numerous times over the years. A complete lack of care when it comes to this type of testing, isn’t uncommon.

This particular batch of food has been in circulation for over six months, with zero issues reported.

Currently there is NOT testing at the industry level for H5N1; however, this is coming, and is in the R&D phase. In a short period of time vendors will have even more tools to keep your pets safe.

Bottom line. We are watching closely as this unfolds. We are all raw feeders here at Julz Animal Houz and will continue to do so, without fear. Additionally, every vendor that I have spoken with has implemented further safety measures with their sources and in house.

The safety of your pets is of the utmost importance to every single vendor we work with, and with the Julz Animal Houz team.

Here is a great, informative explanation of what is going on now with H5N1.

To say that "avian influenza is on the rise" or to assume that avian influenza is a new and scary disease is irresponsible at best. Quite simply, the reason that we are seeing it come up now and haven't in previous years to the degree that we are seeing now is because it is being tested for by FDA now, where before it was handled by USDA and poultry growers. To speak as though we all need to button up our standards now fully assumes that the standards of raw pet food manufacturers are where the problem stems from. We say constantly that one cannot get healthy food from sick animals - what you get from sick animals is sick food. Solutions Pet Products has been defending our foods and consumers from viruses, pathogens, contaminants, etc ever since we ran our very first production batch.

SOURCING: Like most things regarding health, sourcing is of utmost importance regarding, not just AI, but all viruses and pathogens. Starting from a base of healthy birds, who are not exposed to contaminated birds, eliminates the risk completely before the birds even get to our facility. Clean sourcing that encourages a robust immune system is one of the main benefits of regenerative farming.

FERMENTATION: Besides the incredibly effective food safety step of keeping our foods and raw materials frozen throughout the entire manufacturing process (none of our ingredients ever thaw until the consumer thaws them out at home), fermentation has been shown to effectively neutralize viruses and pathogens through “competitive inhibition”. The strength of our food is in its potent probiotic culture that deactivates harmful entities, including viruses.

EXCLUSIVITY: It is no surprise that factory farmed animals are diseased and are creating a culture of disease. That is why we chose to come out of the gate with the cleanest possible sourcing and the highest quality manufacturing standard - we saw this coming. Our food isn’t co-packed and our ingredients are stored in our own private cold storage facility. Nothing that we haven’t vetted comes in contact with our food at any stage in the process.

HANDLING: It seems as though the FDA warnings regarding avian influenza in raw food are based, if we assume honorable intent, on an abundance of caution rather than on any determinable data. To date, there have not been any robust or scientifically valid studies showing that animals can contract AI from eating raw meat that has been properly handled - instances studied involve either direct contact with contaminated birds or improperly handled raw meat. It is easy to lose perspective - if a pet gets sick or dies, we rush to blame something tangible, often food, before considering other factors, such as how that food was handled, the environment that it was kept in or served in, and how the affected pet lived or was treated aside from their diet.

People can throw around their fancy words like "biosecurity" all they like, speaking as though it is a new concept. At the end of the day, we are not going to change anything that we are doing, because we have been doing what is needed to be done to create safe, clean food from the very beginning. Solutions for pets and solutions for the planet are one in the same.

We are, as we always have been, committed to clean, raw, earth honoring foods. As we usher in a New Year, that conviction remains stronger than ever. Thank you all for your support and your passion and we are excited to move forward in consistency and health ❤️
