PSA, we have been busy with Livestock getting out. Other counties as well. The heat and lack of rain has them restless. This is just a few we have hamdled and retured to owners in the last two weeks. Some of them we assited the owners in finding them after they went missing. Please communicate with the Sheriff’s office if your Livestock is missing and when you find one. Often times we can connect people before we have to pick them up.

Can I sell or give away Livestock found on my property?

No, that would be considered stealing. Contact your local sheriff and your special ranger. Burnet county sheriff 512 756-8080

Burnet county. Who do I call if I have estray Livestock on my property?

According to the Chapter 142 of the Texas Agriculture Code, the person in possession of the estray, or stray livestock, is required to “report the presence of the estray to the sheriff of the county in which the estray is discovered.”

There is no such thing as finders keepers regarding estray livestock in Texas or Oklahoma. The finder of an estray may be charged with “Theft of Livestock” if he or she disposed of the estray outside of the estray procedure (Section 142 of the Texas Agriculture Code and Title 4-85.3 of the Oklahoma Animal Code).

Please assist the sheriff by providing the location, number and description of the estray livestock.

Clarifying laws and removing myths in Burnet county. Burnet county is closed range or fence in county.

It means that at some point the entire county or a precinct, or designated area within the county, held a local stock option election and has adopted a stock law. Stock laws can vary in language. Some laws include specific species to which the stock law applies. Usually the stock law (closed range) means you are responsible for fencing in your livestock.

Some counties have enacted stock laws for part of the county, but not the whole county. Therefore, some other counties are partially open range. Some counties are closed range as to some types of livestock, but open range as to others.

In Burnet county you can be cited for violations of the county ordnance. The compele ordance can be found on the county clerk’s website.

🚨 Attention pet owners! 🚨 In response to the recent distemper outbreak in our community, Hill Country Humane Society is taking proactive steps to protect our beloved pets. We are hosting our sixth FREE drive-through vaccination clinic June 27th.

Remember, while there is no cure for advanced stages of this virus, vaccinations are crucial in prevention.

📍 Location: 2221 N Phillips Ranch Rd, Granite Shoals
⏰ Time: 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM

Available Vaccines-
Rabies: Prevents the fatal rabies virus.
DHPPV: Crucial for dogs, this combo vaccine protects against Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, and Parainfluenza.
FCP: Protects cats from Feline Calicivirus.

**** If your pet received their initial vaccine at one of our recent clinics, it is recommended to get a booster 2 to 3 weeks later. For puppies under 18 weeks of age, we recommend a booster every 2 to 3 weeks, either through our clinics or with your veterinarian. Given the current health concerns, it’s advisable to discuss with your vet administering a booster to ensure protection.

Clinic Rules:
Stay in your car- All attendees must remain in their vehicles at all times to ensure the safety and prevent spread of disease.
Cats in carriers- For their safety, please keep all cats in carriers while at the clinic.
Do not carpool- Distemper is highly contagious.
Bring Water for Your Pet- Ensure you have water available for your pets, especially on a warm day, to keep them hydrated and comfortable.

No appointment is needed—just drive up with your pets and our team will take care of the rest. Spread the word and help keep our community pets safe and healthy! Vaccinations are essential in preventing the spread of disease, and we urge all pet owners to participate.

I’m sure most of our community is aware but in case you missed it.

Hill Country Humane Society has received test results confirming that a dog from the Kingsland area was positive for canine distemper along with other dogs showing signs and symptoms of distemper. There has been a second case in the Marble Falls area as well. Distemper is a highly contagious virus that can cause respiratory issues, gastrointestinal distress and even neurological issues that resembles rabies. This disease can be transferred in many different ways from airborne to simply a dog shedding its coat.

Due to the seriousness of this virus and to prevent a potential county wide spread epidemic, Hill Country Humane Society is currently not taking in any animals. We are in full support of the Humane Society doing whatever is needed to put a stop to this deadly disease. That being said we cannot currently pick up any loose or captured stray dogs at this time. For two reasons, one being that we simply don’t have another facility to take these animals to and secondly we want to do whatever we can to protect the animals that reside in our county.

We are currently in the works on planning a free vaccination clinic in the county and will update when we have a date, time, and location. We appreciate your assistance in this very serious matter and our four legged voiceless companions are forever grateful for your willingness to keep their community safe.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding canine distemper or you notice abnormal behaviors in your pets or other animals please do not hesitate to contact your local vet or the Burnet County Sheriff’s Office Animal Control at 512-756-8080.

Hill Country Humane Society has received test results confirming that a dog recently picked up in Kingsland has tested positive for canine distemper. A number of our shelter animals have begun displaying symptoms associated with this highly contagious viral disease, which can cause respiratory and gastrointestinal distress, and in severe cases, neurological issues resembling rabies. There is no cure for distemper, only supportive care, so preventative measures to reduce the risk of spreading the virus is key. This case underscores the vital importance of keeping pet vaccinations up to date.

To protect our community and its pets, Hill Country Humane Society is hosting a free vaccination clinic this Wednesday from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at ACE in Kingsland. We strongly encourage all pet owners in the area to ensure their pets' vaccinations are up to date. Plans for additional free community vaccination clinics are underway.

In response to this outbreak, we have temporarily suspended all animal intakes and adoptions to prevent further spread. Our team, in collaboration with Dr. Dan McBride and infectious disease experts, are monitoring the situation closely and implementing effective disease management strategies.

We are committed to enhancing disease awareness and prevention together with our community partners. The health and safety of the animals in our care, our staff, and our community remain our highest priorities. We appreciate the community's support and understanding as we manage this situation and will continue to provide updates as necessary.
