As all of you know for my certification I have to maintain a certain level of continuing education hours. Today I'm attending a webinar about burnout and work fatigue in the animal industry and ways to combat that.

One of the topics about burnout is recovery time:

The four categories of recovery activities are :

psychological detachment --don't think about work when you aren't working!

Relaxation

Mastery-- skill building (non work related skills, like art or music)

Control over time while not working.

It's really important to have recovery time to prevent and reduce burnout! The speaker was also talking about how burnout has long-term medical repercussions. Pretty scary to think about when we all tend to be so dedicated to work.

I pride myself on setting boundaries because I need recovery time for my physical health, but it was really good to remind myself that having recovery time can help me be a better trainer.

I always advocate that my dogs get recovery time too, or my clients dogs :-). Brain break is what I call it.

Context:

We were at my grandma's house for Sunday dinner, and it had been a long fun day. Pixie was very fussy and vocal, restless and unable to settle or find a way to occupy herself while we watched our usual Sunday evening show. I picked her up and placed her on my lap, and less than 30 seconds later she was zonked out cuddling me.

Grandma was so enchanted with how cute it looked she insisted (repeatedly) to take a picture of us.

Oftentimes young dogs get to a state of over tiredness, where they get grumpy or fussy or even annoying. I find it's best to help dogs when they are like this with some self soothing.

As soon as Pixie was in a position to actually settle, she zonked out and when she woke back up she was back to her usual cheerful self.

Do your dogs know how to self sooth? Do you know the signs of over tiredness in your pup?
