Just an update:

For the transport from Altus to OK Humane, the cost for cats is $60. This covers the surgery, transport, and rabies. For the FVRCP, it's an additional $15.

What is it to earn the trust of a stray tomcat?

It's seeing the look of fear in their eyes, but also the hunger.
It's seeing them take a risk because they are starving.
It's seeing the look of distrust as they eat quickly.
It's learning when to sit close as they are eating and when to leave them completely alone.
It's the heartbreak as they show up with another injury.
It's the knowledge they have learned to be afraid of humans by a cruel act.
It's watching them slowly learn to relax a bit around your company.
It's seeing their bodies tense when you make any sudden movement or noise.
It's taking a risk to try and touch them, knowing it may undo all your progress.
It's learning where you can pet them and what area will make them bolt.
It's worrying about them when they disappear, sometimes for days or weeks and sometimes forever.
It's the relief when they finally come back, and devastating when the look of distrust is back in their eyes.
It's starting over, again and again, to earn their trust.
It's celebrating a breakthrough, when they start staying closer to your house and when they are legitimately happy to see you.
It's the joy when you can finally pet them without them flinching.
It's the fear when you take them to be vetted and neutered, torturing yourself with "what if" while waiting for the call.
It's the happiness knowing they are safe and comfortable, if just for a night, as they recuperate inside.
It's finally seeing the love and trust in their eyes when they see you.
It's hearing their purr as your pet them, knowing they have not used their purr motor often.
It's seeing the progress every single day as the lucky ones are able to enjoy the indoor life for the first time.
It's earning their trust, their love, their adoration, one day at a time.

Loving a tomcat is stressful, gutwrenching, and worrisome; but the reward? The reward is so worth it.

Another beautiful, stray tomcat no longer contributing to unwanted kittens! This boy, called Snap (as in, gone in a snap), was a difficult neuter because he doesn't trust humans AT ALL. Thanks to generous donations, we were finally able to catch him, neuter him, and release him. He was also ear-tipped. Now he can continue living his life without constantly being beaten up while competing with other tomcats. We cannot do this without you, and every little donation helps!
