A week in, the chicks are feelin great! These “Freedom Ranger” chicks are bred for meat production and foraging qualities. So they are the perfect fit for pasture raised chicken! 🌾🐓

Freedom Ranger chickens produce tender, succulent meat with high levels of omega-3 fats and low levels of saturated fat.

Watch for them to be available for your freezer in June! Just in time to thaw them for a summer BBQ. 😎☀️

We think these grass fed steers are looking mighty fine for grazing through the winter! This week with the snow was the first we had to supplement them with hay.

Have you gotten the marrow bones before when you order your beef? DON’T miss it!

They might come labeled as “dog bones”, but these little treats are loaded with nutrients and taste like beef flavored butter!

If the jelly like texture is not up your ally, add them to your potatoes. Our family’s favorite is to add them into our mashed potatoes - turning a pile of worthless carbs into a nutrient dense fat bomb!

There is “grass fed” ground beef in stock online!

A little “secret” that some people may not know - our bulk burger sales are typically from our Hereford breeding stock cows that need to be culled for various reasons.

This actually makes for the most delicious ground beef you can buy! Because the beautiful steak and roast cuts all go into the grind.

This also makes it “grass fed” as our cows are almost always grazing, while getting an occasional skid loader bucket of husklage on the snowy days.

We could say it makes a leaner ground beef, but our cows stay pretty plump on their cover crops! 😎💪🏼

They look so pretty in the snow! ❄️

But snow can cover up the cover crops and make foraging harder for the cattle. Depending on the growth of the cover crop and the amount of snow, the cows don’t need extra feed.

But in cases where the crops didn’t get as much growth or the snow has a hard icy crust, we make sure the cattle aren’t getting hungry by feeding hay and husklage.

Though many times, the cows prefer to do what they do naturally, and forage and graze. 🌱

Cover crops are getting grazed!

We’ve been rearranging cows like it’s our job this past week.

Some new steers got wormed, retagged, and moved onto cover crop. Our grass fed animals have been moved to fresh cover crop pasture. The mama cows have come off summer pasture and are home for a bit while we wean the calves…then they will go to new cover crop forage. And more…

It’s just that time of year, where the cover crops that have been seeded are nice and lush and the grass is slowing down. Another season to thank the Lord for! 🌻🍁🍂

Early morning fence building with Mom. This seed corn field was harvested and the pre-seeded cover crop had got some great growth!

We will fence off several fields for different groups of cattle to forage on through the fall and winter.

So thankful for the time that farming allows us to work alongside family!

We are so excited to be able to offer beef boxes for those wanting less meat than a quarter beef. Whether the freezer space or cash flow are tight, we hope that we can make purchasing our beef more accessible!

Cover crop seeding has been underway for the past few weeks. Zak's converted Hagie will spread the seeds under the canopy of the corn allowing us to seed earlier and get more cover crop growth.

This cover crop will be our animals winter forage. This is a sustainable and regenerative grazing technique that keeps our cattle (and now sheep) fat, happy, and healthy.

It also means we don't have to spend time feeding hay or hauling manure. 💩
