📦101 things to do with a box!
💥Boom 💥 Boom Puppy Power! Building puppy confidence with Frenchie, Viktor, Frankie & Louis! Pupz'nHarmony 101.
💥Seems like a very trivial task, right? Just toss a cookie in the box, and my pup will hop right in. Easy Peasy. ... Ah! But not so!
💥Each team moved at their puppy's pace to shape confidence, climbing into various boxes and stepping up on stools.
💥The pictures in this post are the end result.
💥This! Is how we do it! Building confidence that will last a lifetime with any novelty the pups might encounter as adult dogs.

Dog Training Myth - " Only tell them once." Great post from Suzanne Clothier

Today's Dog Training Myth of the Day: "Only tell them once!"

What if you ask a dog (whatever age, breed, s*x, background, training level) to do something, but there is no response?

Set aside the myth of "only tell them once." Good rule of thumb: if it were a toddler, what would you do? Probably wait a few beats, be sure you had the kid's attention, then ask again.

Just like us, dogs may not be tuned in 100% because they are busy having their own experience of life which may or may not include you at any moment.

If you *do* have the pup's attention, and they did hear you, next step is to consider that they do not understand and/or don't see the point!

I've often asked clients to stand on a chair and sing happy birthday. I've done it while they were trying to take notes. Result: no compliance, and they say usually say, "Sorry - I was focused on taking notes. What did you say?"

If they are paying attention to me but look at me as if I'm crazy, I ask, "Did you understand what I asked? You did? So why aren't you doing it?" Inevitably the answer is, "I don't want to" or "Why would I do that?" It helped them understand how their dogs might be responding.

So give your dogs the courtesy of clear communication, engage attention first, be sure there is understanding, and make it worthwhile for the dog to work with you. Respect, courtesy and taking responsibility for what we are communicating and how we are communicating -- those are all supportive of healthy dog/human relationships.

This does not mean repeating, Sit-sit-sit-sit-sit-sit which is not good communication no matter who you're talking to! 😊

If you want and need response to just one request (and this has great value!), you first have to teach understanding, understand that connection and attention must come first always, then develop the skill, tighten the criteria and make it worthwhile. Then practice!!!

❣️THIS‼️The handsome, 9-month-old Calvin practiced his calm "Zen" skills a.k.a. "Adults are talking."
🟢During our training session, Calvin quickly learned that Big Dividends (treats & lotsa calm praise) happen for just chillin' and relaxing instead of counter surfing or rehearsing other mischievous behaviors when he's not the center of attention at the moment.

Wahoo! This! Just in from the field! Superstar Teddy from Pupz'nHarmony 201! Teddy's mom spells out "Ted" with treats while playing our mat boundary & it's yer choice games! So very proud of Team Teddy! 👏WTG!
✅️Concept Games! Playing the 2 games together helps teach pups self-restraint and an automatic leave-it without saying anything (no commands or verbal cues). We reward pups for making really good choices on their own!
✅️Training concept games for the moment! Not in the moment! Imagine if these treats were an accidental spilled bottle of 💊prescription pills.
✅️Added Bonus! This fun game helps pups learn to stay on their mats, too!

Over Excited/Hyper Aroused Dogs need the opposite of what most people think.
07/27/2024

Over Excited/Hyper Aroused Dogs need the opposite of what most people think.

Hyper, over aroused and over excited dogs.
They just need to burn off some more energy 🚫
Physically exhausting a dog does NOT help over arousal.
It can fuel it.❗
With the very best of intentions, people continue to add more of the very thing they should be limiting .
For many dogs all this does is add to the issue and can create a highly energetic dog with incredible stamina.
You are not alone with this, it is a common issue.
People will throw that ball again and again for a hyper/over excited dog, all in an effort to tire them out.
They will walk them further and run them faster.
It doesn't help💥.
All it does is build extreme stamina so they NEED more and more to physically exhaust them.

They need to rest and sleep.
They need limits with the opportunities to repeat behaviours .
They need to reengage their nose to calm and relax them.

If they don't...the loop goes on and on.

❣️This is an excellent analogy! Not just for dogs/pups with over reactive behaviors or aggression, but any type of fear or anxiety.

This analogy also helps puppy parents with socializing their new puppy to our world.

TRAFFIC LIGHTS AND REACTIVITY

Before trying to work on improving reactivity, consider what colour your dog’s emotional state is in.

The belief or expectation that by continually exposing reactive dogs to triggers will make them get over it, is setting dogs up to fail.

Generally, a dog that is reacting to something does not feel safe – they are in survival mode – a mode where learning and appropriate responses simply cannot take place.

Neurotransmitters like adrenaline and cortisol flood the brain causing automatic responses intended for survival. This red zone is certainly not the time or the place to try to change behaviour.

We need to start working with a brain that is calm, relaxed, focused and feels safe – the green zone, where learning can take place.

A calm nervous system is essential to learn a new way to respond.

To recognise which colour an emotional state is, we need to become more adept at recognising and interpreting our dog’s body language.

Being aware of body language enables us to intervene before our dogs’ emotions – the “traffic light” changes colour.

Always start in the green zone, this is where we can really help our dogs to learn strategies to cope with triggers.

Keep working in the green - reinforcing, proofing and building confidence.

Once behaviours are established in the green, we can try moving into the amber zone by allowing our dogs to notice and be aware of distractions, but at a sufficient distance where they still feel safe and are able to focus. This is where we can make distractions or triggers feel far less threatening.

Stay out of the red as much as you can. Avoiding this is not always possible – life happens / the unexpected happens and we have no control over this.

In this case get as much distance as possible between your dog and the trigger.

We can’t teach our dogs to feel safe, but we can help them feel safe by managing the environment, taking small achievable steps, being aware of body language and intervening when their emotional traffic light is about to change colour.
