Hello dog lovers- Meet Duke!

Duke is a 4 year old Bull Terrier who came to stay with us about a month ago as a foster. We are happy to announce that he is ready for his forever home!

Duke has spent his whole life in a home that didn’t have time for or understand him. We were told that he would spend around 20 hours a day in his crate. When we first met Duke, he was dirty, covered in bed sores, and triggered by things that reminded him of his abusive past.

Now, through some TLC and positive reinforcement training, Duke learned to deal with those triggers. His bed sores have also healed up tremendously with only a few still lingering around. He has decided to show us his awesome and spunky personality, one thing I can guarantee is you will always be entertained with Duke by your side!

What Duke needs for his forever home:
> A lot of love and attention. He has gone 4 years without it and needs a family that can give him the love he deserves.
>Lots of walks!
> Preferably no other animals, Duke does fine with cats and dogs under supervision. He has never had the opportunity to meet them before, so he can come on too strong for some animals.
>Kids are a bonus! Duke comes from a home with young children.
>Someone with an active lifestyle. Duke is very energetic and will do best with someone who can exercise him and train him.

In just the month we have had him, Duke has learned sit, down, wait, focus, leave it, and jump! He loves playing toss the treat, as he’s an incredible catcher!

Happy Saturday Trick 4 Treaters! I would like to give a training spotlight to a very special dog today.

Recently, we have started to work with Pawsitive Cause Non-Profit Animal Rescue to help their fosters train rescue dogs to be more adoptable. We focus on basic obedience cues and solving behavioral issues that would limit options for a furever home.

I had the pleasure of meeting Debbie Koschay Markham and Henry through this program. When Debbie rescued Henry, he was struggling with heart worm and untreated glaucoma that ultimately led to his blindness. Since taking Henry in, they have worked as a team to teach Henry how to acclimate to his new way of life.

A few weeks ago, Henry had surgery to remove his eyes due to the untreated glaucoma. I could not be more proud of the progress he is making after yet another life changing experience.

Henry is a goofy, food loving, smart dog who feels happiest with a toy in his mouth. He only knows how to love (and cuddle!) and is so grateful for a second chance at life. Please, join me in showing love and support to Henry on his journey!

Monday was a big day for Trick 4 Treat Training- graduation of our first group training class! All dogs successfully completed Level 2 training material. We focused on adding different intensities of distance, distractions, duration, and diversity to our cues. This helps ensure that these wonderful dogs will be able to listen to their owners anywhere, not just in a quiet room with a treat in the hand!

Happy Friday Trick 4 Treaters!

Today brings an exciting announcement from Trick 4 Treat Training. The last few months have been spent establishing a space for group training classes. I am happy to announce that I am finally able to offer group training classes!

Courses will be held in Flint, MI in a renovated 4 car garage that my wonderful client agreed to sacrifice to my cause (Thanks Cyndi!) Facility is located ~5 minutes from For Mar Nature Preserve, for reference.

Why chose group training?
> Group training brings benefits that other versions of training cannot replicate. A social environment allows your dog to learn material in a well rounded way.
> Your dog receives crucial socialization time on a weekly basis. I have seen lifelong friendships formed in group training courses- dogs and owners!
>A new environment, friends, and other timely added distractions throughout the course teaches your dog to listen in more life like scenarios.
>Socializing in a controlled, yet consistently changing environment helps prevent future aggression, anxiety, and overexcitement. Just coming to class each week will benefit your dogs overall behaviors.
> It is cost effective! Group training courses are 4 weeks and cost $180 per dog.
> If you still aren’t convinced… it’s puppy school! You get to go to school.. for dogs! Once a week! It rocks!

How do I know what class is right for me?
> Puppy 101: a one-time informational seminar that covers everything you need to know before getting a dog. This is a great option for first time dog owners! Come with or without your dog.
> Puppy 102: 4 week course for dogs 10 weeks - 6 months covering beginner cues (sit, leave it, come when called, loose leash walking, etc)
>Level 1: 4 week course for dogs 6+ months covering beginner cues and behavioral issues
> Level 2: 4 week course for dogs who have completed Puppy 102/Level 1 OR possess a similar skill level. Classes are centered around the addition of distractions and consistency of known AND new cues (stay, heel, place, etc.)
Level 3: 4 week course for dogs who have completed Level 2 training OR possess a similar skill level. Course covers all material needed to pass The AKC’s Canine Good Citizen Test.

Happy hump day everyone! Wednesdays have become one of my busiest dog training days, I have started to call it my Day of the Dogs! ❤️🐶

If you’re like me, you might be worried that you won’t be able to retain all of the information we cover in a one hour training session (it’s a lot!!) Check out these examples of the handouts I will leave with you to help you practice between our sessions.

Today Cleo decided she was going to let us know the session was over (about 5 minutes before our stop time 😂) Trying to train your dog after they hit this point won’t get you very far! When dogs are too tired, they aren’t going to be as willing to practice and they most likely won’t retain the information. When you’re practicing on your own, 20-30 minute sessions are ideal. Job well done today Cleo, she gave it her all!

Congratulations to Finn for completing his 4th private training session this week! He made so many improvements. We worked on come when called, emergency stop, overexcitement with company, leash walking, and much more! Finn and his pet parents did a great job learning and practicing each week.
