Position Summary
The Lead Veterinary Technician plays a critical leadership role within the veterinary healthcare team. In partnership with the Practice Manager, this position is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the clinic and providing supervision to all support staff, ensuring the highest standards of patient care, and facilitating effective communication between veterinarians, technicians, and clients. The Lead Veterinary Technician serves as a mentor and resource for technicians and is responsible for their ongoing training and development.
Key Responsibilities
• Supervise, train, and mentor veterinary technicians, receptionists (cross trained), and kennel assistants, ensuring adherence to clinic protocols and best practices. Provide regular feedback to identify opportunities for growth and development.
• Coordinate daily workflow and assign tasks to technical staff to maximize efficiency and quality of patient care.
• Ensure medical appointments and surgeries are being properly scheduled.
• Assist veterinarians during examinations, surgeries, and medical procedures, including anesthesia induction, monitoring, and recovery.
• Perform advanced technical duties such as blood draws, catheter placements, radiography, laboratory diagnostics, dental cleanings, and medication administration.
• Facilitate communication between veterinary staff and clients, providing education on animal health, medications, and post-treatment care.
• Conduct audits of medical records and invoices to ensure accuracy with patient records.
• Ensure compliance with all safety, regulatory, and animal welfare standards.
• Participate in the hiring and selection of new staff and implement new staff training.
• Plan and oversee ongoing training and development for current team members with a focus on continuous growth. Track Continuing Education (CE) participation as required for all staff.
• Create the weekly schedule for all support staff. Track and approve Paid Time Off requests while maintaining adequate clinic staffing.
• Assist Practice Manager with strategic planning to identity and set goals that ensure the success and continual improvement of the practice.
Qualifications
• Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in a veterinary clinical setting, with demonstrated leadership experience.
• Strong knowledge of veterinary medical procedures, anesthesia, pharmacology, and patient care standards.
• Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple priorities.
• Commitment to maintaining a positive and collaborative team environment.
• Proficiency with veterinary practice management software and digital medical records preferred.
Physical & Working Conditions
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and handle animals safely and compassionately.
• Work involves frequent standing, walking, bending, and exposure to animal allergens.
• Availability to work flexible hours including evenings.
