When it comes to ticks and tickborne pathogens, who are the 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐞𝐬 and who are the 𝐕𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬? 𝐏𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐦𝐲 #𝟏 is the white-footed mouse. 🐭 This common mouse host multiple larvae and nymph ticks throughout the summer months. Through this process, ticks can transmit pathogens to other feeding ticks and also infect the mice which can then infect more ticks. The white-footed mouse is very successful in this process! Showing Examples of some teeth that we did recently as to why it's so important to stick to some form of dental preventives such as teeth brushing with dog approved toothpaste, no human ones as these contain fluoride which is toxic to pets, water additives are always great. 𝐌𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐃𝐨𝐠 𝐓𝐢𝐜𝐤! The largest of the common ticks seen in Northeast and most common spring through summer. They can be easily identified by their unique white coloring on their bodies. Don't let their common name trick you, they do not ONLY feed on dogs and will also seek out humans, cats and other companion animals. These ticks rarely carry tickborne illnesses but are capable of transmitting Ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain Spotted fever and Tularemia.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 - 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐮𝐬. Transmitted by the Lone star tick, cases of Heartland virus have been seen in the NE and central USA. While rare, the first case in Pennsylvania was in 2022. With the continued spread of the Lone star tick through the northeast, there is a greater risk for exposure to other tickborne pathogens. Be tick aware and check for ticks!
