Something very important to keep on the mind during these months is possible heat stroke or exhaustion in pets. There are going to be times that it may be too hot to leave your dogs outside all day or even take them for a walk!

These handouts are helpful ways to know if your dog is more at risk or what conditions are truly not recommended for your pets to be in. If heat stroke does happen it is a true emergency that your regular veterinarians may not be able to accommodate depending on their own availability so it could only prolong how long your pet is in the life threatening situation. Almost all dogs who are treated as soon as possible survive, but time is of the essence in this situation.

Feel free to call your regular veterinarian to ask what they might recommend to help during these hot times or even to ask their procedure for such a situation!

Keep yourselves and your pets safe!

Happy Friday Butte! Hope everyone has a safe and happy weekend planned.

With the heat and camping well upon us we wanted to remind everyone of the importance keeping pets up to date on their preventatives for intestinal parasites. These include heartworms, hookworms, tapeworms, fleas, ticks, etc. Most worms are transferred through pets eating some type of dead carcass whether it be a deer, mouse, bird, etc. so definitely local wildlife!

Ticks and fleas hide usually in warm clustered/crowded areas like tall grass, trees, shrubs that many of our animals walk right through without realizing what could have infected them in mere seconds. One of our staff members had her dog out in our field to go to the bathroom and he had ran through some tall grass only to come out with a tick on his FOREHEAD! Therefore we can say with 100% certainty prevention is needed!

Here at Highlands Veterinary Hospital we primarily carry Interceptor Plus and Credelio as a combination to cover heartworms, tapeworms, hookworms, roundworms, whipworms, fleas, and ticks alike. Attached to this post are some informational slides on the two products and what they are protecting against.

Reach out to your regular veterinarian to ask what steps are needed to get your pets started on prevention. Better late than never!

Happy Winter Wonderland Butte! Hope you are all driving safe and keeping warm!

We know that many of our clients have already reached out to ask about a recent email we sent out with some updated information about our emergency services. Unfortunately we are down to one doctor here at Highlands Vet so we are unable to offer emergency services outside of the hours 8-5:30. During our regular business hours we will do our best to accommodate as much as our staff can handle, but no longer have the staff to offer after hours. We are saddened by this decision but it was made with the best standard of care in mind for our community's pets. Bridger Vet Specialists in Bozeman or Sentinel in Missoula are 24/7 ER facilities that are closest available.

A fantastic resource if caught in an unfortunate situation where you feel your furry family member needs emergency medical care but are not sure if you should head to the nearest ER for your pet is the website VetTriage. While this website does charge a $50 fee, you are able to speak to a licensed veterinarian that can help you navigate the best next step. Directly from their website:

"VetTriage is aimed at minimizing your anxiety and providing you clarity as to whether or not immediate in-person veterinary assessment is advised. As such, one of the following will be the advice given to you by our veterinarians at the completion of your triage session: (1) Monitor and care instructions at home, (2) See your family veterinarian once they reopen, or (3) Seek immediate in-person treatment at a veterinary emergency hospital."

If you have any questions for us during this changing time please call at (406)299-3700 during while our phones are on between 8:30-5:30. Have a great weekend!

How VetTriage Works From your browser or mobile device, click “Connect Now,” enter your information, and you will be taken securely to Paypal to purchase your triage session using a major credit card or your Paypal Account. Triage sessions are fixed rate, regardless of session duration. Once you...

01/24/2024

Recently we have been seeing a decent amount of a**l gland issues with our patients, so our doctor wanted us to put out a bit of an educational post on what to be aware of are signs of a**l gland issues at home.

First, let's explain a**l glands. All dogs and cats have a**l glands, or more appropriately called a**l sacs around their a**l cavity. They are supposed to naturally express themselves when our pets have a bowel movement. Some dogs may even express them when they are scared or stressed. You can usually tell by the pungent fishy scent that comes out that is unique to each pet.

Now the important part of this post, what you can watch for to best advocate for your pets. Seeing pets scoot their bottoms on the floor, excessive licking or scratching in that area, straining to defecate, any blood/pus near the area or brown spots in places where our pets are sitting, and also a very strong pungent odor are all signs that there may be an issue going on and should call your regular veterinarian to follow their procedure to schedule an exam. These glands can become impacted, abscessed, or infected so keeping an eye out for these signs can be crucial.

Many different things can cause issues in a**l glands for our pets. Unfortunately it can end up requiring multiple exams, diagnostic testing, different medications, and a lot of time to bring pets to a comfortable place with their a**l glands if they have the disposition. Here are a list of things that can cause these problems:

Chronic skin dermatitis
Obesity
Insufficient dietary fiber
Chronic soft stool
Food and/or environmental allergies
Genetics: While it’s more common for smaller breeds to develop issues with their a**l gland no breed is immune.
