Sunflowers brought smiles to our faces today.
Johnson grass is a nightmare. It spreads through seeds of course, and these juicy roots. On the bright side, the smell of the soil under them is intoxicating- a sign of happy microbes.
The roots have be dug out completely- any little piece left behind will grow more. It reminds me of cancer. Any root chopped into smaller pieces and left behind will make that much more.
Ranchers say cattle like it- some say it’s even good for them (I’ve heard conflicting info on this)- we don’t have cattle or goats. And veggies have a difficult time competing with this grass- which can get to be 5 feet tall. So in sensitive areas, I dig it out.
The big white roots remind me of lobster meat - they look like they should be edible (they are not to my knowledge and I’m not willing to test caution).
Would chickens eat them?🧐
It’s seed day at the farm. Starting with marigolds .
