๐ฟ Project โCover the House with Vinesโ is finally in progress! ๐ฟ
I love wisteria but I know it can be controversial since itโs considered invasive in many areas. But donโt come at me, yโall! I bought this Chinese wisteria plant a few years ago and just now put up the trellis. Back then, I didnโt know there were American non-invasive varieties of wisteria, though Iโve heard theyโre harder to find at nurseries. Itโs crazy that nurseries even sell invasive plants, but they do. ๐คทโโ๏ธ
Donโt worryโif any escapes the garden, our goats will surely devour it. ๐

I made a trellis for the side of the house. ๐ก ๐จ
And it only took me like two months to decide on the pattern and then actually make the time to do it! ๐
Oh the joys of living with ADHD.
Then I went to hang it and there was a wasp nest in the wisteria vines that I made the trellis for.

Every year I struggle to keep weeds out of my garden beds. I use mulch but weeds just grow right through it. Does that mean my mulch needs to be a lot thicker? Am I doing it wrong or does everyone struggle with weeds? ๐ฑ

Tonight is Augustโs second full Moon, a Blue Supermoon. ๐
When a second Full Moon falls within the same calendar month it is known as a Blue Moon, hence the expression, โonce in a blue moonโ used to describe a rare event.
This Full Moon is also a โSupermoon.โ In fact, itโs the closest Supermoon of 2023. โSupermoonโ is a catchy term for what astronomers call โa perigean full Moonโ which is when the full Moon happens at or near its closest point to Earth in its oval-shaped orbit.
Itโs exceptionally close in Moon miles from Earth (222,043 miles).
This blue supermoon is a time for releasing the past and a chance to detox from any stresses and dramas that have been going on in our lives.
Since itโs bigger and brighter in the sky, the Super Blue Moon is a powerful time to cleanse and charge crystals by the moonlight.

Our Vinca Flowers are blooming! Thanks to for gifting me these transplants from her garden ๐ธ
Annual vinca (Catharanthus roseus) is a tropical perennial that is grown as an annual in most regions. It has flowers and foliage that resemble impatiens, but rather than being a shade lover, annual vinca is a perfect choice for sunny locations. Also known as Madagascar periwinkle. They are drought tolerant and pest free and come in white and a variety of pinks and lilacs.

Amaryllis blooms ๐น
The name โamaryllisโ comes from the Greek word amarysso, meaning โto sparkle.โ โจ
The amaryllis is a spring blooming bulb. In my experience theyโre easy to grown and low maintenance.
Historically, there has been a bit of confusion regarding the name of the plant. Most amaryllis varieties grown these days are hybrids and not โtrue amaryllisโ; they are instead part of the genus Hippeastrum. True amaryllis are members of the genus amaryllis and are also know as belladonna lilies, despite not being true lilies. With all that being said, both Hippeastrum and amaryllis are part of the amaryllis family, so theyโre both considered amaryllis. That wasnโt confusing at all was it? ๐

Please leave the leaves!!! ๐๐๐
Don't chop up pollinators. You may be destroying eggs, caterpillars, and chrysalis along with the leaves. We suggest that leaves in garden beds and lawn edges be left whole. Where space allows, consider creating a leaf pile and allowing it to break down naturally.

"A neighbor asked me if the caterpillars did damage to my plants, and I told her "This is a new way of gardening. You plant FOR the caterpillars and you want them to eat your plants because that's the only way we'll have more butterflies." I'm not sure my neighbor understood; I could tell it was a completely new concept for her."

"If something is not eating your plants, then your garden is not part of the ecosystem." What does this mean for how we garden?
- Insects only eat the plants to which they are adapted.
- Insects eat plants for a reason (eating plants is part of their life cycle).
- The chain of the ecosystem is that other critters (like birds) eat insects or eat things that eat insects.
Therefore, supporting insects with plants that they can eat is how your garden can be part of the ecosystem. If you want to have butterflies, bees, birds and more to be part of your garden, you have to support the circle of life.
Thanks to Ellen Honeycutt for the graphic and the story.
For I wanted to share Gavinโs fox hole fire, shown here cooking PB&J hobo pies on a few years back. ๐ฅ Also known as a Dakota fire hole or Dakota fire pit. Itโs a valuable wilderness survival aid because it burns fuel more efficiently, producing hotter fires with less wood. It also produces less visible smoke and less light, so itโs great for when you donโt want to be seen. For anyone interested in how they work, Iโve included a little diagram. ๐ฅ ๐ฅ ๐ฅ

We are a micro farmstead in Calvary, GA and sanctuary to 60+ animals, run by myself, Autumn Skye, and my two animal loving, tree-hugging, home-schooled kids, Gavin (16) and Summer (12). The three of us share in the responsibility of caring for the animals, garden, and honeybees.
Our eclectic menagerie of rescue animals currently includes 8 pot bellied pigs, 30+ chickens, 3 ducks, 2 bunnies and 5 goats. We are home to 11 rescue cats who come and go from the house and barn as they please. We also have 5 dogs, a family of rainbow finches that we took in years ago, 1 mud turtle we took in, 1 gecko, 1 bearded dragon, a yellow bellied slider turtle that we saved and 4 fish that needed a new home, 2 of which bred; and we now have about 85 convict cichlids who need homes. And last but not least, Papaya the Parrot, a Catalina Macaw who rules the roost, literally. All of our animals are treated as family, get lots of free range
of our 10 acre field, come into the house often, are vaccinated and wormed regularly, get fresh fruits and veggies and always lots of LOVE.
We believe wholeheartedly in spaying and neutering; every single animal on our farm is fixed or will soon be fixed with the exception of the chickens, ducks, finches, parrot, fish and turtle. I assure you we'd have them fixed too if we could...especially the roosters and our very fertile fish LOL. We DO NOT use our animals for profit and every animal that comes here has a forever home or is adopted out to an approved forever home. Since 2015, we have found loving homes for 8 other rescue piggies and 5 rescue kittens.
Summer, Gavin and I are all passionate about animal rights and the environment! We live a humane, compassionate and eco-friendly lifestyle and are striving to improve it every single day. We are mostly vegan...in other words we eat eggs from our own very happy, healthy and spoiled, free-range chickens and enjoy some of the honey from our beehive. We do not consume meat and dairy or store bought eggs and honey. We do our best to not harm or contribute to the harming of other living beings. We recycle and compost absolutely everything possible, reuse anything we can, and regularly plant new trees on the farm. We have a small organic garden of culinary herbs, veggies, fruit and now medicinal herbs and our garden is expanding continuously and will soon be a permaculture farm. Our garden is home to a beehive and a large worm compost bin.
We believe that every animal deserves respect, compassion, love and LIFE. Our animal sanctuary is currently awaiting its non-profit status and is registered as a non-profit incorporation with the state of GA, Flying Pig Animal Sanctuary at Hippie Chick N Farm, Inc.
Our motto is Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rescue
