ElkFlat Farm

ElkFlat Farm ElkFlat Farm in Caldwell, Idaho, raises grass-fed beef naturally, with no hormones or antibiotics. Fr Give us a shout if you're interested in our beef.

Phil and I started ElkFlat Farm back in 1991 as a way to raise homegrown, healthy food for our family. Our kids grew up knowing where their meat came from; that animals needed to be treated well and live a good life as they made their way to our table. We like to share this good food with our neighbors here in Treasure Valley. We hope that you are looking for a quality product in grass-fed beef, n

atural pork and chicken raised right here, where you live. We don't use any hormones, antibiotics or growth enhancers on our custom meat. Just good local grass hay for the beef and hay and grain for the pigs and chickens. The processors we use are local - they'll get to know you, too, when you buy a steer or pig from us. Every step of the way, it's like a neighbor helping out, helping you find and enjoy the best, healthiest meat for your family, right next door. We're taking orders for 2016 and butcher in the fall. Pork usually finishes out in January - chickens are in summer. We've got a little something for everyone. As we like to say, 'From our farm to your table - it's that simple!'

Time for some good grass hay! Everyone’s looking forward to it.

It’s been so long since we’ve posted anything, but figured a big thanks was due to Team Meyer, Team Stark and Team Coykendall!! We had such a great time with your excellent help, giving our momma cows their pre-calving shots and health checks.

So glad you could join us for a chili feed afterward. Who’d of thought we’d be sitting outside basking in the sun in mid-February?

Next up, calving vacc in June. Hope you can join us!

We are still waiting on a couple more cows to calve and then we’ll be finished for this year!

We are so excited for this calf crop because we’ve added some Wagyu genetics to the herd to add some marbling into our meat! These will still all be grass fed, so the flavor will be amazing!

Mark you calendars for next fall, when they’ll be finished and ready to go!

Our oldest cow calved on the farm this week!

L05 was born here in January of 1995 to an old Brahma/Beefmaster cow.

On Saturday, she had her 23rd calf with no issues! She is a perfect example of what type of cows we like to run on our farm.

We look for good mothers that can be efficient on simple feed, continue to get pregnant every season, and support a calf through the cold months and hot summers.

Extra proud of this cow! We would love some ideas to name this new heifer! We hope she's on the farm for another 25 years!

Our cows are incredibly protective of our calves, something we need as our property borders the Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge!

This bull calf’s mother was a little more protective than usual, so we made sure to stay inside our calf cart to tag and vaccinate it.

As you can see in the background, his mom was watching us very closely!

Bull for Sale: 2 yr old Simmental X Angus

704 is an excellent choice if you are looking for high docility, high calving ease, and efficient growth on average feed.

At weaning he weighed 820, and as a yearling he weighed 1050 all while being fed only long stem grass hay.

He has been trained to calmly load into trailers, walk through the chute, and be around people and dogs without aggression or poor attitude.

We have videos and additional pictures available. Please message or call for price.

Able to be delivered upon purchase.

We are incredibly proud of our farm hand, Katie Hebdon. She ran and was chosen to be secretary for the Boise Valley District FFA!

She came to us last summer looking for a job because she was interested in learning to work with livestock. She started out learning how to change water with Phil, and moved around the farm assisting with day to day chores until she was comfortable working around cattle.

She has helped us work calves, vaccinate cows, treat sick animals, and feed bulls. She always is willing to help, stay late, or come out early.

Thanks for all your help Katie! Congratulations on your officer position with Boise Valley District FFA!!

After each calf is born, Phil goes out with his calf catcher and processes them. Every farm or ranch has their own personal way they process their calves to get them a head start on life, so we may do things a little differently from what you've seen before.

He has a cart attached to his 4 wheeler that allows him to quickly catch a calf out in our pastures. Once that calf has been caught, he will weigh, ear tag, vaccinate, and do a general health check. This heifer that we processed today, looks to be about two or three days old. She was born out of a cow that we had bred by AI in June of 2018, so she will be adding some new genetics into the herd in two years!

We are over half way finished with this calving group, and so far ( fingers crossed ) so good!

03/25/2019

It was a beautiful day to go out and check calves. With the warm weather like it is, calves are feeling frisky and adventurous. It's always good to see calves up and active when they're only a few days old. We are just over half done calving, and have been pleased with this new group so far!

Nothing like a 1am rodeo to wake a person up... came home late last night to find 100’ of our roadside pasture fence smashed down by someone who had drifted off the road.
Hopefully no one was hurt and we’re glad they were able to get someone to help pull their vehicle out, though smashing another section of fence to get back on the road was a classy touch.
Luckily we used the 4wheelers and rounded up the mommas with their new babies and fenced them off that pasture by 2am. Quite the night!
Bottom line, as long as the critters are safe, and no one tagged a black cow standing in the middle of the road at midnight, we’re grateful.... and hope whomever you are, that you’re ok, too.

We had our first T-bone from this year's harvest (1" thick, medium rare, let rest 10 minutes before serving) and it was amazing; tender, juicy, full of great flavor. This is why we love grass fed beef!
There's still time to try some with your family this year. We have one half share available for sale, plus are now selling by the piece... contact us for pricing! [email protected]

Wow, summer’s gone fast! We just finished weaning and are now selecting for next year’s bulls and custom beef.
These guys and gals wear a nose tag for one week while at their mother’s side. It keeps them from nursing but they get the comfort of being by Mom. Works out great! One week later we’ve brought the calves in to the arena and there’s not a beller or moo to be heard. Cows and calves have both moved on with little stress.
It’s also time to get your order in for beef in the freezer this year. We’re down to just a couple left! If you’re interested, visit our website ordering page for details, and thanks!

Leaving the arena bearing a patch of pride... well, a heat patch at least. We’re going to AI this weekend and have cycled all the cows to come into heat on Saturday. It’s fun to pick bull/cow pairings for the best potential bull prospects and tender custom beef. We’re adding wagyu to our custom beef cows this year! This is going to be good! :)

It’s that time of year... calving season started two days ago and it’s hot and heavy in a good way. Tagging calves in the safety of the shark cage is good for both us and Momma cow and calf. Love it when everybody’s back together again!
