Here is a little back story from when my husband and I first married and purchased our first “lab”together. We were young and not super versed in people just looking to make a buck off any random dog. We didn’t have a lot of money and couldn’t afford a “pure bred registered lab”. So we opted for a purebred non registered…
I wanted a black Labrador for hunting. I had always had labs growing up and knew I wanted one. We found someone selling a male. We spoke with the woman, got to see the mom who was in fact a black lab. We did not get to see dad. But we took her word for it. He was not registered but at the time I didn’t understand the importance.
We took R***r aka Rugie home and he was so sweet, so loving, huge feet. We thought he would be a monster. I was excited. My dad took one look at him and said that is not a lab that dog has basset hound or something in him…. I said he’s 8 weeks old dad that’s all. He was pudgy.
Well two weeks go by and he got longer but not taller… vet check and they confirmed the suspicions that he was not purebred. He has we**ie dog and quite possible a basset hound or chihuahua in his DNA we intend to test for fun. He never got taller just longer. And I walked to my dad embarrassed to tell him he was right.
We kept Rugie because that is what you do when you get a dog. He is 10 years old now. He has leg, hip, ear, teeth problems and who knows what else but we love him.
However we learned a lesson that has led us to breeding the way we do and building a reputation. Intended Sir’s and Dam’s are researched first, full heath clearances, OFA/OFEL, eyes, genetics all tested for assurance to the person purchasing that they are getting exactly what they are paying for. A 100% pure bred Labrador retriever, that has been cleared of all genetic health conditions to the best of our knowledge. This does not mean they will not get ill ever just means we have cleared them of the known genetic health traits that labs can have. Hip and elbow dysplasia’s, heart conditions, eye conditions…etc.
Which also then answers the question as to why are some AKC or even non AKC labs less money. There is no guarantee you are getting what you pay for that is why they are cheaper, No testing, no clearance, no promises. Some might be microchipped. Most will not give you a health guarantee for return purposes. Most will sell the dog and be done with it no return or refund offered if it is not a right fit.
We vet clear all our pups, dew claws always removed, vaccines and dewormers up to date until the pup goes home with their owner. High quality food when weaned , Microchips registered to us and the owner so we are notified if one of our pups get found and the owner cannot be reached. The added assurance that if the owner cannot continue care for the dog due to life events that we will take the dog back to either keep our selves or find it another good loving home.
We love on these pups until they leave us, they start potty training basic commands/ obedience with us, retrieving and leash training if they are with us past 12 weeks. They are socialized and exposed to stressors to give the owner a well rounded, non threatening dog, they are around young children, other adults/ people and cats. They sleep in a crate beginning at 6 weeks. Whelped in a room with momma that has her crate for her comfort and for easy transitioning for them. I am with mama from the time she goes in to heat, she is always well monitored and fed a high protein high calorie die t during her entire pregnancy and postpartum until fully weaned. And we are prepared and equipped to step in and help her deliver if it is needed. I weigh the pups daily, monitor room temp and their temps until they are 6 weeks. And they are all handled by me or my husband daily. Seen by a vet within the first 3 days of birth and 2/4 more times until they go to their FUREVER homes. I keep in Touch with All of our pups owners weekly for the first while, then monthly, and yearly. We provide assistance and advice if needed, boarding for our past pups if their owner goes out of town… we love all our litters and all our dogs/pups.
A dog will have their own personality, their own traits no different than a humane. Our goal is to make sure that all our potential pup owners receive a well rounded dog for family and hunting.
Our females are not left unmonitored outside during their fertile time and definitely not around other uncut males that are not intended studs at all during their cycles.
R***r is a wonderful boy but a good example as to what can happen when someone breeds a dog without knowing how to correctly and humanely breed an animal to provide a quality dog that will live a healthy life. R***r has been our one dog with multiple health issues, he lives with pain as you can see from the deformity in his legs. We love him and will continue to care and love him forever.
