Sand Holler Farm

Sand Holler Farm Sand Holler Farm is a small family farm in Dale, Texas. I post about farming, family life, cooking and throw in a bit of farming philosophy and politics.

Our homestead is 90 acres in Caldwell County, just SE of Austin, owned by the Littles. We aim to grow as much of our food as possible, including eggs, milk, vegetables and fruit. I no longer live on the farm (I'm an hour away in Austin) but I spend as much time there as possible!

We had an awesome crew of friends come out and help put up some fencing this weekend! Everyone's kids had the day off to just play on the farm. Amazingly, they were fascinated by the potato dig and actually helped out a bit. :)

Thanks to everyone that came out!

Death is very much a part of life on a farm. But sometimes it hits you hard nonetheless. Last night we lost our Crooky. She was a good age for a chicken, probably about 5. When the girls and I lived at the farm, she was in the house most every day, picking up crumbs or even getting a special treat. She was a good chicken and we will miss her.

The last step in Richard's care was removing his overgrown spur. His infection was due to an injury to his leg months ago. His limp from that injury (and the abscess, I'm sure) made it so that the spur in that leg was not naturally worn/broken at all. It was beginning to interfere with walking.

Amazingly, to get a spur off, you just grab, twist and pull. The 'quick' heals rapidly and begins to grow a new spur.

And the kids have a new toy. 🙄

Richard the Rooster was my patient for the day. He has 'bumblefoot' - a staph infection that forms a hard abscess. It requires a minor surgery to remove all the solidified exudate. His abscess was unbelievably deep. I thought I was about to remove the last tiny bit when I pulled out a bizarre sliver nearly as long as my finger! 😳 He's all bandaged up and asleep for the night. He was a good patient and only drew a small amount of my blood before I had him properly restrained.

And now I won't be able to eat chicken for weeks. The smell! 😵

Tecolote Farm

Tecolote Farm just east of Austin was hit hard by the storms last weekend. If you have time today, stop by to help out and enjoy some lunch!

We have a great framing crew, thanks to Eli Mosley & Chris Mosley ~ the Mos. Bros. Construction Team (actually Mosley Design Build), but we would love some more hands on deck to pick up brush, sort and move the wood torn from the barn rafters, pull nails, find out where to recycle solar panels, etc. Come on out now if you're able. Lunch for our volunteers coming your way from Michelle Carlson, Cake and Spoon, yeay Melissa!, Royal Blue Grocery 2, yeay George!, Decker Creek Bed & Breakfast & Biscuit, yeay Pat!, and after-work libations from Hops and Grain, yeay Danny and Josh and crew! PLEASE SHARE THIS POST!
This is FOR TODAY. Right now.
