Local treasure valley friends... PLEASE be aware this year when taking your dog out. I will not be taking them to Lake Lowell or to the snake river.

UPDATE: Jan. 6 Confirmed by Idaho Fish and Game: “Yes, those goose mortalities were caused by avian influenza. Unfortunately, thousands of migratory snow geese have died from avian influenza in the western Treasure Valley over the last month.”

Bird Flu? Toxins in the water?

It was reported on December 13 by KTVB that Idaho Fish and Game confirmed sick and dead birds, mainly geese, have been reported in the Lake Lowell, Parma, and Fort Boise areas, and Idaho Fish and Game staff are actively working to pick up carcasses in areas with the largest number of dead waterfowl.

Will update if Idaho Fish and Game confirms what has caused these multiple birds to die in the area in this particular picture.

In the mean time:

▫️Keep pets out of Lake Lowell.
▫️Limit access to your poultry or bird enclosures to essential personnel.
▫️Wear dedicated clothing and boots when handling birds to prevent spreading the virus and bringing it in to the bird’s area or coop.
▫️ Isolate new or returning birds for at least 30 days before introducing them to your flock.

Report sick animals to any Fish and Game regional office, conservation officer or local law enforcement personnel.

FROM IDAHO FISH AND GAME REGARDING BIRD FLU IN GEBERAL :
“The health of Idaho’s free-ranging wildlife and fish is an ongoing emphasis for Idaho Fish and Game.
Not only can disease limit wildlife populations, but some can be transmitted to humans and domestic livestock.

We hope this information is helpful for sportsmen and the general public who encounter out-of-the-ordinary conditions with animals they harvest or find.

General Precautions
Idaho Fish and Game always encourages hunters and anglers to take these simple precautions, if they are handling free-ranging wildlife.

Always wear rubber or latex gloves when field dressing or cleaning a harvested animal.
Do not eat, drink or smoke when handling fish or wildlife.
Do not allow pets to eat dead wildlife or feed them tissues from harvested animals or fish.
Reporting
Idaho Fish and Game examines and tests tissues from dead fish and wildlife, often supplied by the public. Here are a few suggestions on things you can do, if you encounter a sick or dead animal.

Record observation such as odd behaviors, marks, wounds, swelling, the color and thickness of any discharge.
Take pictures of the affected animal or wound area.
If you collect samples or the dead animal, always wear personal protection and put specimens in double plastic bags to contain fluids and tissue.
Report sick animals to any Fish and Game regional office, conservation officer or local law enforcement personnel.
It is not legal to kill an animal just because it appears to be sick or injured.

For additional information, contact the Idaho Fish & Game Wildlife Health Laboratory at (208) 939-9171.”

Sherman is improving!
No more eye shifting symptoms. He's still off balance and has the head tilt, but he is drinking water and eating a little which he was able to keep down 🙏

Thank you all for your comments and messages of support. It's hard to see my boy like this as he's been the healthiest dog his entire life up to this point. The vet told me "He's getting older and he's not going to be able to fight things off like he used to." Which I do understand. It might be selfish of me to think that 16 years isn't enough time, but I'm not going to stop trying everything within my power.
Sherman developed a massive ear infection out of nowhere that is really scary. He's off balance, his eyes are shifting back and forth and he's been sick to his stomach and not eating. He's on antibiotics, steroids and a special ear flush. Hopefully that works but I know how stubborn and unpredictable ear infections can be. Depending on whether it's middle ear or inner ear and whether or not it's bacteria or yeast or both causing it. We're hitting it from all angles and hoping it will be enough. Right now we're on day 2 without eating 😓

Sherman is not doing very well 😓 please send all the prayers for my old man 🙏
