I was going to post some kind of fluffy quote in solidarity with horse welfare, but over the past 24+ hours every time I have gone to push the send button it just hasn’t felt right to sugar coat it. We have all seen the photos and outrage on social media over the nosebands… and if you’re a horse lover you have probably spent the same amount of time as I have in disgust.

If you have to resort to putting chains or spikes (“studs” as they are called in retail to make them sound better) on the delicate facial structure of a horse in order to be able to manage that horse, or for that horse to not “push against the martingale” it’s time to move from riding a kind empathetic animal like a horse to one who’s only maintenance is pumping air in its tires.

If you are a brand who distributes and profits off devices like these, you shouldn’t be in business. Period.

These animals that we ride get nothing out of what we are asking them to do, other than basic care - something we should offer any animal that we decide to bring into our lives.

Upon further review, these nose bands are legal in USEF/USHJA competition. USEF members can submit rule changes, and if you are interested in doing so for the benefit of the horses in competition, here is the link: https://www.usef.org/compete/resources-forms/rules-regulations/rule-changes

UPDATES GUIDELINES AVAILABLE 📢

The AAEP has issued revised Internal Parasite Control Guidelines to help minimize the risk of parasitic disease and maintain the effectiveness of current drugs for as long as possible by delaying further development of anthelmintic resistance.

The updated guidelines account for recent advances in knowledge concerning increased anthelmintic resistance and optimization of parasite control management practices. They also address common misconceptions and offer parasite control program recommendations for senior horses (over 15 years old), mature horses (between 5 and 15 years old), and young horses (under 5 years old).

The guidelines were reviewed and updated by the AAEP Internal Parasite Control Guidelines Task Force, chaired by Dr. Nielsen and comprised of 10 AAEP members predominantly board certified in veterinary internal medicine, veterinary parasitology and/or veterinary microbiology. Something about this time of year always makes me reflect on the things I am thankful for. Getting to celebrate the end of another year with friends and family, the incredible horses that I am lucky enough to have in my life, and the customers that allow me to live my dream of running a tack store and playing with horses all day. Life doesn’t get better than this. I’m so lucky for all of you that have touched my life and allow me to do what I do. I can’t thank you all enough for all of the blessings that allow me to live this life I have.
