What measures have you taken to reduce fire risks in your barn? 🧯

According to the National Interagency Fire Center, in 2024 there have been 16,940 reported wildfires in the U.S. to date. As we head into the hottest time of the year, make sure your farm has a fire prevention plan and an evacuation strategy in place to keep both horses and people safe.

Check out the graphic for ten fire prevention measures to get you started on the right track to a safer facility. This list is not meant to be exhaustive and we invite you to contact your local fire department and your veterinarian for guidance on designing a prevention and response plan tailored to your specific situation.

Barn fires are the number one local emergency affecting agricultural facilities. They can cause horrific injuries and kill more horses than any other type of disaster, so being prepared is only in your best interest!

Great information from the American Association of Equine Practitioners

"Cool" hot weather tips! ☀️

The notion that a hot, recently exercised horse needs to walk until they are completely cooled off is a myth. A 2020 study found that out of the five methods tested, the quickest way to return to normal body temperature was stationary with continuous tap water application. This doesn't mean that you should abruptly stop exercise—finish your ride or training session with a slow walk to allow your horse's heart rate and breathing to gradually return to normal, but after that your sweaty, hardworking horse should be offered a cool shower and drinking water (small but frequent amounts) without delay.

Overall, enjoy your summer rides but be aware of signs of heat stress in your horse. When heat and humidity soar, even moderate exercise can push your equine friend's body temperature beyond safe limits! Be sure to contact your veterinarian for more information about heat stroke and for recommendations tailored to your horse's individual situation.

Do you know the difference between a tick and a flea? Why does it matter?! Both are capable of transmitting disease to an animal AND to a human. They can also cause a lot of distress to animals and humans! Fleas are insects, with 6 legs and no wings. Ticks are arachnids (yes, like spiders 😲). As Dog Anxiety Awareness Week wraps up, we want to leave you with this video explaining fear, anxiety, and stress (FAS). You may see these scales in our exam rooms. Ask us about it sometime, and how we use it to gauge how your pet is feeling, and how we may alter our course of action to make them more comfortable. Remember, FAS is cumulative; this means it will escalate with each visit if we don't address it early, and effectively!

When you bring your pet in for a visit, you may notice we try to work on their timetable. Not rushing a cat out of a carrier, not approaching a dog until he is ready, or possibly stopping everything and regrouping. We are not scared of your pet! On the contrary, your pet may be showing signs they are scared of US. Or just the situation ("stranger danger"), maybe they had a bad experience in the past, or possibly the car ride made them nauseous. They don't always tell us WHAT it is, but we can read their response. We follow a scale of Fear, Anxiety, and Stress (FAS). Ask us to show it to you! The reason we want the visit to go well is that FAS is cumulative. This means (if we just "manhandle" them and "get it done") the next visit will be worse, and so on and so on. If we can make one visit better, gradually each visit will get better. Ask us about "Fear Free Fun Visits" and "Victory Visits". Our goal is to make your pet comfortable and improve care for everyone!

Sometimes a car ride can go wrong. Many pets feel stressed or fearful enough that they have stress diarrhea or motion sickness. Please let us know when these events happen. We can help alleviate these symptoms, and make the trip better for everyone! Our motives may be selfish: if a pet comes in feeling better, our exam will go better too 😉. Relieving FAS (fear, anxiety and stress) makes subsequent visits better and makes EVERYONE happier!
