We originally bought This horse for me to ride with no real expectations other than to have fun and carry me around. He was a four year old, had minimal training but was cute and had a fun and slightly mischievous personality. Fast-forward a year and half. Danielle started to ride him after McCloud injured himself rather severely and spent a month at Cornell Ruffian Equine hospital. What started as a fun little project for Danielle has become an incredibly solid relationship and to watch it blossom as a spectator has been so enjoyable. These guys are my favorite team because I know and love them both. He’s such game horse for his young age and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for them. Capital!

I’ve forgotten how to savor Summer. I don’t know when or how it happened. I used to long for hot days with friends. We’d swim in rivers and jump off of bridges into deep water with little care in the world. We’d wake up early and stay out late chattering with enthusiasm and itching our pock-marked mosquito bitten skin. Now I itch my nymph tick bitten skin and complain about the lack of a breeze or the wretched humidity. Getting old is funny. Long live great dogs and summer days.

Posie taking a respite from motherhood to do farm chores with me this morning. The pups are almost four weeks old. She’s been quite attentive but I think she needed a break. Lots of rain and heavy storms overnight. The earth needed the rain. Wishing everyone a restful day.

A teaching moment - young Albus learns to sit still and be patient while the farriers (Ike and Craig) shoe the horses. Albus handled it perfectly. Cool as a cucumber. Five months and showing great promise in the field but great engagement and presence in our foundations.

A Cocker field trial - 1955 - Marshall Field estate - Cold Spring Harbor, NY (Long Island), photographed by Toni Frissell. Remarkably similar yet different from a modern field trial. Sixty nine years ago some of the dogs actually look quite similar to the dogs today. However, nowhere to be seen is a fluorescent orange Cabela’s hooded sweatshirt.

Distant Thunder - 1961 by Andrew Wyeth depicts a perfect Summer moment. A carton of blueberries, a faithful Labrador, a mug of tea, and a nap in the tall grass under the sun. May we always find peace in quiet moments in nature and may they endure when all else fails.

Picking up on a shoot day with a dog or even a group of dogs can be great fun! We will be hosting an “introduction to picking up” seminar series in August for those who are interested in teaching your dog to work a shoot. We will teach basic shoot fundamentals along with proper shoot etiquette.

Working with animals can at times be so frustrating. With joy often comes sadness. All we can hope for are healthy and happy dogs and horses but it doesn’t always go to plan. This morning Posie gave birth to five puppies. The first four were lively and well but the last was much smaller and stillborn. I don’t know how nature knows but as soon as she licked the pup she knew it wasn’t alive and pushed it away. Our nieces Maddie and Ava had arrived to be taken to pony camp just as the last pup was born. Not exactly a happy moment witnessing their first puppy being born. Everyone cried. They named her Blackberry. At pony camp they made her beaded bracelets with her name and when they arrived back at the farm they picked flowers for a burial ceremony. We wrapped blackberry in a linen Hankerchief and buried her under an old Beech tree where Candy was buried. We said a few blessings and prayers. RIP Blackberry.

After an infected tick bite, an allergy to an antibiotic, heat stroke, full body hives and anaphylaxis, a trip to the ER, more hives, another trip to the Dr. and a few days that I didn’t leave the bed, I’m happy to report I’m feeling a bit better. What a week!😁

I’m a few days late but wishing a very happy 9th birthday to my good friend Rose. A very mischievous yet talented dog. Rose belongs to a good friend but I’ve fortunately had the opportunity to spend quite a bit of time in her company.

Wishing Misselchalke Kratos (O’Leary) a very happy fourth birthday. A full on character of epic proportions and a fine specimen of an animal. I’d take as many of him as I could get. He was sold to as a year and a half year old and although I lost a very nice dog, I gained a true friend. Looking forward to making more memories together with you guys.

Just a friendly suggestion - If you have a puppy or young dog and live in New York like we do, take extra caution over the next few days. Your puppy isn’t acclimated to the heat and humidity like we’re about to get and will be more vulnerable to heatstroke and heat exhaustion. We’ll be out in the mornings and evenings leaving the dogs indoors during the middle of the day. 🥵

Wishing everyone a healthy and safe Memorial Day. Most importantly we give sincere gratitude and thanks to those who lost their lives fighting for our freedom both in battle and after. Thank you.
