Pyloric ulcers! If your horse is struggling with performance, behavior changes, diarrhea, repeated colics, sensitivity to the leg, and many other generic clinical signs, they could be suffering from pyloric ulcers.
Gastrogard does not always successfully treat these ulcers, so a scope is essential to determine what kind of ulcers your horse may have.
Other medications such as sucralfate and misoprostol are often warranted.
Please contact us for an in the field gastroscope to determine proper diagnosis and treatment of equine gastric ulcers.

New office hours 8 am- 5pm!

Progressive equine is excited to announce a new member to the team! Melissa Hernandez is our new office assistant.

Melissa lives with her husband Diego (a farrier) and their dog Jags in Simi Valley. Her love for horses started when she was 2 years old and began riding at the age of 7. She studied Equine Science at Pierce College and has worked along side Dressage and Jumper trainers.

With her addition, our office will be open from 8-5pm Monday through Friday.

Dr Dygert is getting his next patient ready for his physical examination. Miniature horses need the same routine care as adult horses- vaccines, f***l checks for deworming, coat and nutritional assessment, hoof care, dental care and sheath cleaning. This patient was wonderful to work on, oh and adorable!

Navicular disease is a commonly diagnosed bone disease that can cause sore feet, especially in the heel region. The navicular bone is a small bone located underneath the coffin bone. The deep digital flexor tendon passes over this bone and attaches onto the coffin bone. In severe cases of navicular disease, the roughened edge of the bone can cause damage to the flexor tendon.

Common treatments include:
- corrective shoeing
- Osphos
- navicular bursa injections (pictured above)
- anti-inflammatories

Radiographs can be taken to confirm navicular bone health. Sometimes an MRI is warranted as well to check for evidence of bursitis.

Attempted scalping! 🤕⛑️ 🩹

Head wounds can often go deep to the skull since the skin is so thin in this area. Have puncture wounds checked by your vet so they can be properly cleaned, disinfected and closed. Antibiotics are often warranted to prevent infection. Check stalls for areas they could have hurt themselves on to avoid any future lacerations.

Cushings? What is it and how do I know if my horse has it?
Cushings, also know as pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction is a pituitary tumor that causes hyper secretion of cortisol. Clinical signs include long hair coat, not shedding out properly, fatty deposits and sore feet.
Confirmation is best done through blood testing to check response to sugars and to see baseline blood values.
Treatment includes diet changes and prascend that helps suppress cortisol release and alleviate side effects from the tumor.
Ask your veterinarian if your horse should be tested.

Happy clients make us happy! We love the relationship between horse and rider. It is our goal everyday to keep your horse healthy and thriving. Remember drastic weather fluctuations can come with changing drinking patterns. Whenever it goes from hot to cold, it is a good idea to feed horses soupy mashes and electrolytes so it promotes drinking through the cool down. Look out for signs of colic or dehydration and call your vet if you are concerned.

Progressive Equine specializes in joint therapy not only for the performance horse, but also the geriatric patient.
Osteoarthritis is a progressive disease that we see often in older horses. Radiographs will show excess bone development and sometimes collapse of the joint as seen in this case.
If your horse seems stiff or lame at a walk, contact us to determine a therapeutic plan for joint health and pain management.
