Heather’s beloved kitty recently died, and she brought to us the kitty’s belongings so they would not go to waste. What a kind, thoughtful gesture! Thank you, Heather. You have our sincere condolences. 🕊️🕊️🕊️

We adopted Barney from in April 2018. He was an 8 year old owner-surrender with the unfortunate name of “Schleg.” Who the hell would want a schleg? We decided we did, and adopted him that day. On our way home, the name “Barnabas” popped into my head. We shortened it to “Barney,” and thereafter only referred to him as “schleg” as a silly term of endearment.

His fur was so overgrown that we kind of doubted that even our amazing groomer Toni could help him. Imagine our surprise at finding that, hidden under all of that hair, was an adorably cute little maltipoo. Who knew? We had ourselves a diamond in the rough.

Barney got along with our other dog, Berkeley, immediately. He wasn’t used to cats, though, and our two cats weren’t used to rude dogs. One morning he lunged at Girl, and El Cucuy popped out of nowhere and slapped the living s**t out of him. Thus ended Barney’s cat chasing days.

Barney and Berkeley were part of our friend Rhonda’s little pack. She’d come by with the other three little dogs she walked, and they’d take off down Ocean Avenue on great adventures. When Jeff and I went out of town, our dogs stayed with “Mama Rhonda.” She and her husband Bob and daughter JoJo were their favorite people in the world.

Barney was diagnosed with COPD a couple of years after we adopted him. His walks became shorter and shorter, and when his walking partner Berk died in 2022, they stopped altogether. Our younger dogs, Saki and Picabo, were too energetic for him, so he and Jane Pink, a shy, older rescue we adopted after Berk passed, would hang out together. Barney and Janie, who has pulmonary hypertension, became the best of friends.

Breathing became more and more difficult for Barney, and Jeff and I knew it was time to consider humane euthanasia and made an appointment with our vet. Sadly, this morning we watched Barney rapidly go from listless to non responsive. I sat next to his bed and whispered to him, holding him gently until he passed.

It’s amazing how such a little guy could make all of our hearts so heavy. Such a tiny old man. Such a precious schleg.

Charlotte had her first recheck yesterday. She had her sutures removed, and she no longer has to wear her bodysuit. In fact, she can ditch her pineapple soft cone in a few more days. She has to remain crated for now, but she is allowed to come out once a day while heavily supervised and take a few steps. She is healing well, and we have hope that she will be able to make a full recovery. Charlotte, you are a miracle. Good job, little fighter! ❤️❤️❤️

Here they are, this week’s naughty and nice cats. Nice cat of the week is Pearl, who couldn’t wait to come to the café. We doubt if she’ll make it through the week without getting adopted. This is one nice kitty! 😻 Naughty cat of the week is Mars, who recently was caught trying to scalp his fellow felines for fur trophies. We believe that may be a piece of Mr. Bones hanging out of his mouth. 🙀
