Practice, practice, practice!
With the Pa opener just around the corner, I’ve been brushing up on some whitetail skills. Eye work is one of those things that can make or break a deer mount, so I want mine to be great!
Here’s a little look at some of the work that goes into a freeze dried turkey head before giving it color.
Almost any turkey that comes in is going to have bird shot damage to the head. I fill and blend those shot up spots with Apoxie Clay. It stands out a bit now, but it’ll blend right in when I paint it up! 😎
Happy Memorial Day, everyone!
Just a short clip showing how I gather some of the habitat I use in my bases. And people say working can’t be fun. Pshhhh! 🍁 🌱 🌳 🪨
Bird fleshing 😱😱😱
Folks always see beautiful finished trophies. Well, here’s a look at the nitty gritty side of taxidermy! Although not flattering, bird fleshing is an absolute must for any bird that comes through the door. Without removing fat, oils, and excess meat, the mount would eventually begin to stink and rot. Exposing quill bases is also extremely important, allowing for optimum feather workability. Without doing it, the bird would look a bit mangey 😜
Happy Friday!!!
