I am a farrier.

I’ve tried to find/identify myself with many different career titles in years past. I’ve “chameleoned” into many different roles while constantly finding myself unfulfilled and depressed with no sense of purpose or satisfaction in my day to day work. Wealthy wages or not. This career is different.

I’ve been kicked. I’ve been bit. I’ve literally been s**t on by the very first horse of the day. I’ve had horses flip over backwards. I’ve had horses break my tools and kick a hole through their stall. I’ve picked up the first foot and knew this was going to be the last day this horse was going to be alive.

I’ve hammered nails into a hoof connected to a horse with a 100k price tag. I’ve worked under performance winners and losers. I’ve been thanked by a lame horse that walked off sound. I’ve been trusted to work on the most important part of some people’s lives.

I walked away from horses a long time ago to reinvent myself. I got lost and was running away from the self that I knew. Over a decade later, I’m back. This is me. Love it or hate it, horses make us “horse people” whole. There is a connection in this community of people that should be envied and learned by all. I can’t help but regret the time I was away; I thank God for putting these key people back in my life.

Today was a very special day I will never forget. One of my first clients and favorite “crazy” horse persons moved me to tears. She inspired me to tell you a bit about myself and why I am here doing what I do. I trimmed her 2 horses and she was happier to give these gifts than I was to receive them.

Thank god I am a farrier.
