Hi Everyone! I'm posting this for Charlotte, a long time member of the club who is fostering this lovely dog Honey. She's a 40lb tripod from Thailand, who has excellent inside behaviors and is food motivated, but is still spooked by some noises and shapes she sees outside. Charlotte and her husband can't say enough good things about her -- they were intending to keep her, except that she's a bit higher energy than they can manage in their golden years. If anyone knows anyone interested, I've got a recommendation letter from Charlotte with more info, and can connect you!

I've gotten a lot of questions on this recently!

Barking is a normal behavior and one of the ways dogs communicate. However, some breeds have a higher tendency to bark. Here are some behavior modification steps to help you and your dog gain peace and quiet.

What are those signs? What are those cones? What on earth is Rally O? Well, think of it as moving obedience - and it compliments S3 and 4 nicely, as well as students who have completed the Steps program.

We have a 3 week Introduction to Rally Thursdays at 7:30 Beginning November 4, 2021 (meets November 4, 11, 18).

This is an indoor class and properly worn masks are required. If you have questions, ask your instructor, ask below, but ask!

(If you already know and love Rally and want to practice or do run-throughs, you can join the 3-week class at 8;30 with Nancy for the same three weeks. Info in the same link)

https://nedtc.org/indoor-obedience-and-rally-classes

Due to Covid, our Obedience and Rally classes will be limited to 6 participants, and will be on a 4 week cycle, starting with obedience in October, followed by Rally! Properly worn masks are required for indoor classes.

EXCITING NEWS!!!! Pop some bubbly beverage, put on your fancy pants, and take a deep breath:

INDOOR CLASSES ARE NOW POSTED!

In short (it's long!):
All new students must take an orientation before coming to classes with their dog or puppy.

Masks required for everyone indoors. Try to bring one handler per class to keep numbers down in the building, but we fully understand if you have to bring a partner or child for any reason. We are just trying to keep numbers of people down so we can easily socially distance in classes.

Classes will be capped due to COVID, so you have to sign up each week if you are in the STEPS program. Buy a pack of 6 or 10 classes first, then go to the STEP you are in, and "purchase" a $0.00 class, so we can put you on the roster for that week.

If you don't see your class, it is full for that week. (If you know you can't come, please don't sign up so someone else can get in!)

Puppy classes and competition classes will be 4-6 week classes. For those specific classes, you don't have to sign up each week - just sign up for the run of classes you want.

We are SO excited to be back! Virtual classes will resume in October for those who want those options - we just wanted to get everyone in the building first, then we can focus on our other offerings. So stay tuned!

Squee!

For STEPS classes: https://nedtc.org/read-me , scroll to bottom, purchase the class card you want, then go up and select the class you want (Step 1 for all new students, Step whatever you were last in for returning students). If you had classes left when the pandemic shut things down, ping [email protected] and we will figure out how many classes you still have on your class card!

https://nedtc.org/puppy-kindergarten for all puppy students.

https://nedtc.org/indoor-obedience-and-rally-classes obedience and rally classes have changed format due to the ongoing COVID pandemic, but we are able to do things safely. Check the website at the above link for all info related to comp/rally classes.

If anyone is around tonight to help preparations for going back IN PERSON next week (SQUEEEEEE!) the NEDTC team would be over the moon! We'll have some swiffers and a vacuum of awesome, so if you can come from 5-7 to help with cleaning mats, counting inventory, etc, it would be greatly appreciated! If you have a mop, bucket or other cleaning supplies we could use, bring 'em!

Last night of teaching for the Summer Session (no classes next week as we prepare for Fall Classes!) and it's Melissa McCue-McGrath's last night on the field before she moves to Maine. She's been the co-training director of NEDTC with Donna since 2012, and has been a trainer for NEDTC since 2009. She'll still be around, taking on the virtual programming for NEDTC as we move forward. If you see her tonight, make sure to say "See you later" because it's not goodbye. It's just a new thing. You can listen to Melissa whenever you like on her podcast (BewilderBeasts), read her book "Considerations for the City Dog" (which features many NEDTC dogs in the pages), or find her on the internet. She's pretty easy to find :)

Captain will not be coming tonight, but he also sends his regards with humor and howls, and will be retiring from the city to a large yard with chickens who will likely not find his brand of humor....humorous.

08/19/2021

Classes cancelled today due to rain, thunder and flooded field.

Stay dry and see you next week!

08/12/2021

Class is on for tonight, BUT:
It's going to be over 95 degrees out. Classes will likely be cut very short due to heat. If you walk more than a couple blocks to class, we'd advise maybe staying home or driving to class tonight (not ideal, but we don't want anyone to overheat).

Bring WATER

If you have a dog / puppy who is not doing well in the heat, it's ok - we'll see you next time.

Brachycephalic dogs (pushed in faces) should not come tonight.

We can put some things up for you to work on in the AC. Watch the feed. We'll keep you busy!

We'll be doing very calm things tonight for those who come but we are expecting a quiet, calm night and will likely cut classes short due to heat for our trainers, our students and our dogs. So be prepared for that, too. Safety is our primary concern.

Reach out if you have any questions!

08/05/2021

Due to the rain over the last 12 hours plus the rest of the day projected, we will not have class on the field due to it being diagnosed as "super soggy" and "super icky" and "gross". Stay home and work on a new trick with your dogs, and we'll see you next week!

Interesting study❤️

A recent study in Current Biology by Emily Bray, et. al., Early-emerging and highly heritable sensitivity to human communication in dogs, caught my eye recently, because it brings up a variety of interesting issues to those of us interested in human-dog communication. One of those is the issue of...

Puppy class!!! Our last in person puppy for the summer starts July 17 and there are only a couple slots left. In-person classes are outside at the Cambridge Friends School from 5pm to 7pm through the season, weather depending.

Virtual Puppy class is still going and will be good for those who are on vacation with puppy, have unvaccinated kids who want to participate in training, don't want to sit in traffic or worry about rain. The best part is you don't even have to be near Cambridge, MA!

Pick the class that's right for your and your family and we'll see you in class! Sign up below😊

$150 for 6 virtual classes to be completed in 8 weeks or $175 for in person classes no paying for classes you miss! Unused Puppy K classes can be used for subsequent Steps. Puppies will spend 6 weeks in Puppy K with one makeup week. Note that after puppy K ends, you are eligible to purchase classes....

Somerville fireworks tonight! We'll have a video soon here and on our Instagram on fireworks safety, why there are more missing dogs this weekend than any other all year, and what you can do to help your pup be safe.

But what do you do for fireworks/thunder season to help your pups?

Join trainer Melissa and assistant Captain (below) for virtual puppy classes! Starts next Thursday (June 17) at 4pm from the comfort of your home. This is ideal of you aren't comfortable for any reason with in-person classes yet, don't want to drive, are outside of our region, have kids who aren't vaccinated who want to participate, want to use your own bathroom, need grey distractions with training, or you just like being home for classes! We also won't get rained out ☺️

Sign up at nedtc.org and we'll see you online next week!

Melissa did another all dogs episode for her podcast BewilderBeasts . If you want to hear about a near-sighted greyhound who needed contact lenses to race, the unbelievable story of how the Seeing Eye program came into existence, or how dogs who protect livestock now watch over the Little Penguins of Middle Island (there were only 10 left when they started), then take a listen while you walk your dogs later today!
