How can you tell if a dog trainer's techniques are harmful? Here's the biggest red flag in dog training: 🚩 insisting on compliance regardless of the dog's emotional state. 🚩

If a toddler has a temper tantrum in a grocery store, their parent will try to redirect their attention (sippy cup? goldfish?) If that doesn't work, their parent might offer a calm down hug. And if the toddler is too upset that nothing helps, their parent will scoop them up and walk them away, or take their hand and lead them back to the car - kicking and screaming, no doubt.
Similarly, if a dog has a big no-thank-you meltdown in an unsafe way or in an unsafe place, we can use gentle control to drag them away from the danger or stressor.
If your dog tends to say no-thank-you, always walk them on a harness. If they say no-thank-you, you can drag them away using the harness. The harness won't hurt or injure them like a collar could.

* Can you remove their object of concern from a situation?
* Can you identify a source of discomfort? Can you relieve it?
* Can you help your dog regulate their emotions with a pattern game?

I saw another trainer comment they don't train tricks because they prioritize manners. (They were trying to justify their use of pain and fear.) I train tricks so that my dog has good manners. What I see: *my dog's behavior is not suppressed due to stress or concern about fear/pain *my dog is not in avoidance. He doesn't believe that investigating food will cause something bad to happen to him *my dog doesn't believe that plates or table food are off-limits. *my dog is not stressed or conflicted when I return to him, as is often seen in dogs who have experienced fear/pain inflicted by their owner/trainer.
