The Past -
I remember when I was young watching this gorgeous chestnut mare trot around the ring. It was a typical Houston afternoon - stifling hot, even in the covered arena - the kind of day where no amount of shade could make you comfortable. Despite that, a crowd had gathered; a new queen had come to roost at the modest boarding barn we called home. She was the epitome of what a sporthorse should be, as she possessed the floaty, ground covering trot of a hunter, the temperament of a Children’s Hunter, and scope of an international-level jumper. She was enough of a contrast to our thoroughbreds, quarter horses, and warmbloods that we found ourselves transfixed that day - even if she was “just hacking”.
‘How do I recreate this level of exceptionalism?’ Is a pretty succinct summary of our breeding philosophy. The goal is a horse that through thoughtful breeding can embody qualities an American hunter or jumper would ask for in her dream horse.
So, about three years ago, the Kennedys started to pursue that dream. We purchased a ramshackle farm in foreclosure, and spent the following six months discovering things that needed fixed at a far faster rate than fixing can happen. So we began on a seemingly endless endeavour - replacing every foot of fencing, clearing out aging structures, and building new barns - almost entirely ourselves. A year and a half later, we had earned far more life lessons than dollars, and yet the farm was really beginning to evolve into something incredible.
