Here is a link to a recent panel discussion hosted by Trupanion (a pet insurance company) regarding the "mystery" canine respiratory infection that is being seen in several states.

Trupanion recently convened a panel of global veterinary authorities and thought leaders to discuss this timely topic.

We, at Wi******er Veterinary Clinic, are sure many of you have seen the news reports regarding the “mystery respiratory illness” affecting dogs across the United States. While, thankfully, at this time, there have not been any confirmed cases in Ohio, we take these situations very seriously and are following the progression of this situation very closely through our professional organizations (AVMA, OVMA) as well as through veterinary networking sites. This illness seems to present with general “kennel cough”-like signs but does not resolve within the typical 5 - 10 days and may take up to several months to resolve. Infection can lead to chronic pneumonia or, in severe cases, acute, rapidly progressing pneumonia that often leads to poor outcomes in as little as 24-36 hours. It does not seem to discriminate against dogs of any age, breed, or vaccination status. Unfortunately, some cases have proven to be fatal even in healthy, young dogs. We do NOT have any reason to believe that there is any current cause for alarm in our area. We will provide additional information from reputable sources as it becomes available.

What can dog owners do?

- ISOLATE your pet if they develop a cough without a known medical explanation (such as tracheal collapse, heart failure, chronic bronchitis, etc). Coughing dogs should not be boarded in a kennel or exercised with other dogs as they could be exposed to additional pathogens that could worsen their infection. In addition, coughing dogs will also pose an infectious risk to other dogs.

- CONTACT your veterinarian if your pet develops a cough and monitor for progressive signs such as loss of appetite, lethargy, depression, weakness or nasal discharge. A pet emergency room visit may be necessary if it is after-hours or if your veterinary office does not have availability.

- VACCINATE your pet. Eliminating or reducing certain known infectious respiratory pathogens such as Distemper, Bordetella, +/- Canine Influenza may provide protection against infectious agents that may complicate this respiratory infection.

- RESTRICT your pet from sharing toys and public drinking bowls, as well as from interacting with dogs that are coughing or appear unwell.

- AVOID places like dog parks, dog bars, and social meet ups with dogs you do not personally know.

- AVOID greeting unknown dogs in public. It is likely that this condition is spread through aerosolized droplets, however, it is possible that it could be transmitted on your clothing and hands from a random dog to your own.

- HYGIENE - wash your hands after any activity or interaction with dogs other than your own.

- ADVOCATE for your dog in public spaces and ask people (and their dogs) to please give you space if you have to take your dog to a public setting with other, unknown dogs.
We will update you as we learn more about this situation as it relates to dogs in Ohio as well as around the nation.

Sincerely,
Dr. Lynn Grinstead and the Doctors and Staff of Wi******er Veterinary Clinic
