🚨 Ground-breaking alert 🚨 We're thrilled to announce two members of our veterinary team, Dr. Hayley Hadden and Dr. Meghan Herron, have published first-of-its-kind research in the Journal of Shelter Medicine and Community Animal Health — on no less!

The ground-breaking study explores how delaying the intake of puppies into shelters, especially those like our partner shelters, can significantly reduce the spread of parvovirus and ultimately save lives. Parvo is a highly contagious and often fatal disease that poses a significant challenge for animal shelters.

Like many animal welfare organizations, Gigi's brings homeless dogs from rural, under-resourced shelters to our campus for veterinary care and adoption services. Usually when a puppy is found as a stray or surrendered to one of our partner shelters, it's taken directly to the local shelter and waits until it can be transported.

In the study, instead of bringing the stray or surrendered puppies immediately to the shelter, community members kept them at home until their transfer day. Then the pups were placed directly in Gigi's transport vans, bypassing the rural shelter environment with its added stressors and risk of disease exposure altogether.

Dr. Hadden and Dr. Herron found that by delaying this intake, shelters can prevent cases of parvo - which means less animal suffering and potential loss of life. Shelters can also run more efficiently by reducing quarantine times and other disease control practices.

“With Gigi’s one-of-a-kind, on-site Parvovirus Treatment Center, we’re committed to not only providing exceptional care for the dogs in our program but also advancing shelter medicine for other animal welfare organizations,” said Dr. Hadden, Clinical Director at Gigi’s.

Dr. Herron, who serves as the Senior Director of Behavioral Medicine, Research, and Education at Gigi’s, and Dr. Hadden lead several research initiatives at Gigi’s and oversee a first-of-its-kind Rescue Veterinary Services program.

Today, we gather in spirit to honor the life of a truly remarkable Akita, Gigi—our namesake, our inspiration, and George's Girl.

Gigi was more than a pet; she was a steadfast and loyal companion whose bond with George defined her name and her life. Her strength, independence, and unwavering loyalty inspired the creation of a place where thousands of animals have found hope and healing in her name.

As Gigi’s health waned, her spirit remained strong—a testament to the resilience that marked her 13 beautiful years. We are deeply grateful to her personal veterinarian, Dr. Tod Beckett, Gigi’s board medical director, and to Dr. Hayley Hadden, Gigi’s Medical Director, for their ongoing love and exceptional care. Their compassion and expertise ensured that Gigi lived her best life, even in her final days, and continue to make a profound impact on countless animals through their work at Gigi’s.

Gigi’s passing is a profound loss, but her legacy will live on in the work we do every day. She will forever be the heart of Gigi's—a reminder of why we strive for more, always Improving the lives of shelter dogs ™ in need.

Rest well, Gigi. You were, and always will be, George’s Girl and Gigi’s guiding light.

Nothing cures a case of the Mondays better than a treat! 🐶🍦 As part of our commitment to improving the lives of shelter dogs, all our staff have completed the Fear Free®️ shelter program. That means we use lots of treats, praise, and extra time during exams and other routine interactions to reduce a dog's stress and build their confidence.
