I highly encourage every horse owner to learn the major muscles and their functions. It will truly improve your horsemanship and your horse will thank you!
: Latissimus Dorsi
โ
The latissimus dorsi is a superficial shoulder and back muscle of the horse. It originates at the thoracolumbar fascia (back fascia), attaching to the supraspinous ligament and at the the spinous processes from T3 all the way back to the sacral vertebrae. It travels down and inserts at the medial aspect of the humerus.
The action of this muscle depends on where the forelimb is located. If the limb is on the ground it provides a propulsion to the whole body, drawing it forward. When the limb is off the ground it flexes the shoulder joint and lifts the leg.
โ
๐ฐ๐๐๐๐๐: Shortened stride, diffilifting lifting the forelimb, tripping.
โ
๐จ๐๐๐๐๐๐ in this muscle could be an indicator that there is a saddle fit, girth issue or ill-balanced rider. Hoof health also has a great impact on the forelimb thus impacting this muscle.
โ
๐ญ๐๐ ๐ญ๐๐๐: This is the widest muscle in the HUMAN body. โ
