It’s always a great feeling to see your work in action. A little client appreciation post, This client is special though. She is my very first client and I’m lucky to call her mine.

Massive abscess that has compromised the medial side of the hoof. I used a heart bar shoe to help alleviate the pressure and allow the frog to help bear weight throughout the healing proces. Pad applied to create space for cleaning & medication

Case of two abscesses that blew from both top and bottom. Shoe fitted with a pad to allow space to keep weight off the toe and give it a chance for healthy foot to grow and stabilize the hoof capsule.

I’d like to take a moment for some client appreciation, farriers don’t often get to hear how their work helps out the horses but I was notified today that two minis made top 10 at Pony Congress. Job well done Mary!

White line disease is a pathological process that creates a separation in the hoof wall eventually leading to pain and lameness but if caught early can be treatable. It is more prevalent in donkeys. Treatment includes medications and hoof resection as oxygen destroys the fungus.

The pattern bar shoe is shoe designed for therapeutic use to raise the heels of a horse to help support the limb and take pressure of tendons/ligaments while they heal. The one shown is an adjustable shoe, removing the plates every 2 weeks to gradually allow more pressure on the tendons/ligaments.

When a farrier asks if your horse stands, these are some of the reasons why.

Every close call I have had with a horse has been with one that someone has said something like “I promise he stands” or “He’s an angel to pick up his feet” or “She loves farrier day”. Shortly after agreeing to work on these horses I usually end up flying through the air, or rolling down an aisle way, or worse, under said horse getting stomped on.

When your horse(s) do not stand to have their feet worked on, this is not a farriers problem. It is yours as an owner. Teaching horses to stand is a process, and while I (and most farriers) will help with the process when a horse is young and truly learning it. But when your 15 yr old half breed kill pen rescue doesn’t stand because you are to scared to pick up its feet and train it, please do not expect us to “cowboy up” or “do it because that’s what i pay you for”. You pay your farriers for a professional service of maintaining your horses feet.

We are not trainers.

We are not there to train your horses to stand.

We are there as a farrier, and personally I will walk away before jeopardizing my career and ability to provide for my family.

Protect your farriers by being honest about your horses, by training your horses, and by providing a safe work environment.

Hand made rodeo hind shoe. The plain stamped branches provide less traction on the back half while the the fullered toe increases traction for stopping or propelling.
