This is very important. If you are in cat rescue, or are taking your owned pet to be sterilized, you need to be aware of any clinics who are currently using Ketofen (a much older generation of NSAID) during the spay/neuter procedures.
!!!!!! KETOFEN !!!!!!
This drug It is primarily used in horses and is not labeled for cats. It can be quite dangerous particularly in kittens and older cats who are much more vulnerable.
When blood pressure is not monitored it makes it even much worse resulting in a lot of side effects after surgery, and as one vet put it “a recipe for disaster.”
One of the vets at Ohio State University had this to say:
“Every time anesthesia occurs, there is a risk of renal injury due to decreased renal blood flow, so there’s one increased chance of a renal insult occurring. Adding on NSAIDs to that, there’s another insult that can occur. For lower-level insults that may cause low level damage during the anesthetic incident and perhaps the next few days that follow, it can absolutely damage the kidneys without putting them into a crisis but the lower-level insults can show a slower course of illness and they can become clinical later. With younger or older much more vulnerable cats, the renal insult can have an immediate effect. Without emergency care intervention, the result can be dire and devastating and in some cases, the injury is so severe that nothing can be done to bring them back. There are alternative NSAIDs that are being used by responsible clinics that are much safer.”
We have learned that cats that have received Ketofen have been suffering severe effects of the drug and have either passed away or are currently in renal failure and are under the care of the top vets at Ohio State University.
Please make sure that whomever you choose for spay and neuter surgeries is NOT in the practice of using the drug KETOFEN. Make sure you ask when you make the appointment and again before you drop off.
If they're using it, walk away!
