We are happy to announce that starting August 1st Dr Marie has joined our Equine Ambulotary Team!

Marie Paquette, DVM, graduated magna cm laude from Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2023. She then completed a rotating equine internship at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Saratoga Springs, NY before joining the team at Canon Hill as an associate equine veterinarian.

Dr. Marie enjoys all aspects of working with horses in general practice, including performing field surgeries, reproductive medicine, and dentistry. When she's not working, Marie spends her time reading, hiking, paddle boarding, or kayaking. She enjoys spending time with her two dogs, two cats, and partner (who is also a veterinarian!).

Interesting case…..
(**Graphic wound photos**)
Meet Mulligan, a sweet little old lady who unfortunately ended up in a tussle with another dog. She was initially treated at an emergency facility, after which we saw her for follow up care. Mully suffered nerve damage and serious wounds to her flank and left hind limb. As sometimes happens after wound repair, Mully’s wounds experienced necrosis and sloughing of dead tissue. Mully’s owner was diligent in maintaining open wounds for a period of time before we could attempt wound revision. During wound revision, the dead tissue was debrided, healthy tissue was undermined, and tension relieving stints were placed. We are so happy to say that Mully has made a nearly 100% recovery! She’s a tough lady with a great mom who loves her dearly. Teamwork makes the dream work!

In honor of February being National Pet Dental Health Month, we’d like to share an interesting case. Zip, a mid-twenties gelding, was seen by Dr. Aly in late January for foul smelling unilateral nasal discharge which only partially improved with antibiotics. It is always a good idea to check the oral cavity in cases like these, as the roots from most of the cheek teeth communicate with the sinuses. Dr. Aly found severe periodontal disease surrounding Zip’s very worn, maxillary first molar on his left side. X-rays of his sinuses and cheek teeth were taken, revealing infection and boney changes around his questionable molar. The next step for Zip was to have the infected tooth removed. Utilizing specialized dental instruments and anesthetic nerve blocks, Dr. Aly was able to keep Zip comfortable throughout the procedure and complete the extraction on the farm. Aftercare involved treatment with antibiotics and anti-inflammatories, and briefly feeding soft mashes until the socket healed.

We have had quite a few calls about recent cases of Potomac Horse Fever in our area and we thought we should address them.

Potomac Horse Fever (PHF) is a non-contagious, infectious disease caused by rickettsial organism. Oral ingestion of infected aquatic insects is the source of transmission and can take up to 7-14 days to see clinical signs.

Clinical signs to look for are high fever, diarrhea, colic, laminitis and edema of limbs and ventrum.

Treatment with antibiotics is very successful if caught early and a vaccine is available to diminish clinical signs. If you have more questions please call

We have recently experienced some staffing changes that has made servicing our clients increasingly more difficult. In order to protect the well-being of the doctors on staff, we will be making some temporary adjustments to our equine emergency coverage. Emergencies will be seen between the hours of 8am to 8pm. Calls after 7:30pm will be returned the following day. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause you but hope by doing so we can continue to maintain our coverage area.
